Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

Hi,

I had a crash of my X recently while trying to view a picture in my Firefox web browser and using the left-right-shift of my Logitech mouse. I used ubuntu-bug to gather the logs so they should be available as attachment to this report.

Best regards!

Hello, can you please activate this PPA and try the version of xserver-xorg-video-intel that is in it to see if the problems still exist?

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

I'm having what appears to be the same crash, though not when viewing an image. My server crashes maybe 1 out of 3 times upon initial login. If I get past this point, it seems to be stable. I've attached my Xorg log from the crash.

Same situation here. Attached xorg log. Happened intermittently when web browsing in Mozilla Firefox. Has been the first time this has happened to me and seems barely reproducible.

This bug is still an issue. I had tried the PPA fix over 6 weeks ago, but the bug continued crashing my xorg on a daily basis. I ultimately disabled the repo. I got crashes twice in the past 4 hours, different sites browsed with Firefox 3.6.6

My coworker and I each run 10.04, but I'm on Kubuntu and he's standard Gnome. We're both impacted.

Is there any more information I can capture/submit when this occurs?

Thanks for your time and effort.

I experienced this problem too, but upgrading to Linux 2.6.36 seems to have solved it for me. Doing this seemed to introduce bug 659405 however, although I have not had it present itself in the last few days.

I have not seen this problem since upgrading to Ubuntu 10.10. I do see occasional "blank screen" after log out but this is much less severe than the issue associated with this bug (542731).

Happens a lot when viewing minecraft maps in firefox (large jpg or png files). Sometimes i can load them, but if I load and reload and switch tabs and back to the big image tab, it will eventually crash X with the above message.

I just got affected by this bug.
I had Firefox, Rythmbox and LibreOffice Writer open. Firefox was "idle" (I was not using it directly but there is my gmail, twitter, etc. web apps). Rythmbox was "idle" (a song was playing, but I was not interacting with it). However, I was using heavily Writer. I have just finished the document, saved it and exported it as PDF using the toolbar shortcut. It started processing and then suddenly I got a blank screen and I was back after a couple of seconds to my X login screen.
I've check the log, so far I have found this:

----------------
Xorg.0.log.old :
(II) intel(0): Allocate new frame buffer 2960x1050 stride 3072
(II) XKB: reuse xkmfile /var/lib/xkb/server-226DBCF313A12D52F144FCF6D1EADA405AE9F409.xkm

However there is no "upgrade" so to speak for LTS. I'm still using Ubuntu 10.04 and I don't plan on upgrading before the next LTS.

And as far as I know the issue is not fix for the LTS. So I would disagree that this bug is marked as Fix Released, it was only partially released to a few of the supported Ubuntu OS.

The bug still exists in 10.04 LTS.
With me it occurs when I open a mail in thunderbird with 2 big attached images.
I also doesn't plan to upgrade till the next LTS on this machine and think the bug should be reopenned till a fix is release in the LTS repository.

I have users here also reporting this sort of crash (in our case it seems to happen when logging in from a locked screen).
It would be very useful if this fix could be brought into Lucid. I'm supporting many desktops in an enterprise environment, and it's only really feasible for us to use LTS releases.

Oliver Sindt (oliver-sindt) wrote :

This problem occurs regularly at our site, too. All 400+ workstations are on Lucid and we don't plan to upgrade until the next LTS release is out.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but my expectation from an LTS release is that these sort of bugs are getting fixed. If not I don't see the point in using an LTS release at all.

Please have look into this as many people are suffering from this problem. Thanks in advance! :-)
