Bug Description

Binary package hint: gksu

In the last installation of Ubuntu (9.10) Gparted did not recognize my partition table, so I had to upgrade from Ubuntu 9.04.

You can see in the screenshot, my partitions are present (Nautilus), but Gparted does not detect.
If this bug is not fixed, it will not let me do a clean installation of the next version of Ubuntu.

Dante: are your partitions visible in the new Disk Utility in the System -> Administration menu ?

Okay, then it's a bug in GParted and not in parted, I suppose.

Maybe you can also try the following 2 commands in a terminal, in case they show something useful:
LANG=C sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda
LANG=C sudo parted /dev/sda print

(BTW: to do a clean installation you don't need GParted as the installer should be able to do the partitioning too, or if you don't need to change partition sizes/locations, you can just tell it to use the existing partitions--it will erase all files outside /root & /home in that case.)

I had the same problem.

Symptoms:
fdisk -l displays what I would expect
parted /dev/sda print says "Error: Can't have overlapping partitions"
Admin-->Disk utility has my partitions, but tells me have 18446744069 GB of free space at the end of my drive

My brute force solution was to log back into windows (I presume like me the reason why this is a problem is because you don't want to have to reinstall windows), use the disk management utility: Start --> Run --> compmgmt.msc
Select the disk utility.
Removed all the partitions except the windows (Maybe I only needed to remove one, but I didn't have anything valuable on my /home partition so I removed them all)

Rebooted from live CD and now Gparted can now see my windows partition. Installed Ubuntu no problem

Had the same problem wit gparted not recognising the partition table.

What happened was that I had deleted my partition table, not on purpose ofcourse. I used 'gpart' to restore it. Gpart wrote it back to disk and GParted did not recognise it.

After some searching I cam across 'testdisk'. Does the same as 'gpart' but with more options IMHO. The key option that I needed in 'testdisk', was to rewrite the MBR.

After rewriting the MBR with testdis, gparted recognised my partitions.

I was working on 8.10 (intrepid) and was upgrading to 10.4 (lucid), well upgrading, preparing all for a reinstall...
