Bug Description

Binary package hint: evolution

Ubuntu 9.10 Evolution 2.28.1.

I have the play sounds and Display a notification ticked in both General Preferences and plug-ins.

The sounds play once in a while when they seem to feel like it and the notification hardly ever displays.

Is this a know issue? Or is there a general fix?

Thanks in advance. Bob.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

Does this happen for every app or only for evolution. Does notify work properly for empathy ?

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Yes this only happens in Evolution. All sounds and notifications work fine otherwise.

What is empathy?

Can you send a notification using "notify-send sometext" in terminal, do you see a bubble when doing that command?

Please attach the log file at '~/.cache/notify-osd.log'

There was no bubble when I ran that in a terminal.

How do I un install the utility that I had to install to run that command?

"bob@bob-laptop:~$ notify-send sometext
The program 'notify-send' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install libnotify-bin"

I did a search for this file and could not find it. Is it supposed to be in the home/evolution folder?

It seems that you don't have the notify-osd package installed. Can go to System > Administration > Synaptics Package Manager and install notify-osd? Please try to reproduce the problem then.

The log file would be in a hidden folder called .cache in home directory. You can press Ctrl + H to view those folders in nautilus,

I marked them for re-installation and then reinstalled them.

Now i can run "notify-send sometext " in a terminal and the bubble does appear.

However when I receive new mail in Evolution it does not appear.

Here is what is in my notify osd log file even after I retrieved two mail messages in Evolution.

[2010-02-10T15:49:01-00:00, notify-send ] sometext

[2010-02-10T15:51:57-00:00, notify-send ] sometext

it's rather libnotify-bin which is not installed and which is the binary which has notify-send

Thanks for the information. it now seems that notifications are working since the logs seems to have what you sent via notify-send. Do you get other notifications? Network connection, power notification, empathy/pidgin notifications?

I started the machine this morning and received a notification that my wireless was connected.

I download some e-mail and no notification appeared.

I ran "notify-send sometext" in terminal again and no notification appeared so I looked at my osd log file and this is what I found.

So I chose to reload and then ran "notify-send sometext" in terminal again and this is what happened in the osd log file.

No notification appeared.

Oh, I think that was because I had the file open. Sorry.

But still when I type"notify-send sometext" in a terminal there is no notification even though it shows up in the osd log file.

After speaking with a member of the ayatana team, changing package to evolution-indicator as that seems to be the issue now.

affects: notify-osd → evolution-indicator

Nigel, I am not at all sure what you mean.

Could you please explain it a little better to a neub?

I've changed the package to evolution-indicator, which seems to be the root of the issue here. Please also report the version of evolution-indicator that you have installed so that someone can take a look at this.

I've changed the package to evolution-indicator? Not sure what this means.

As I stated in my first post I am using version Ubuntu 9.10 Evolution 2.28.1.

When/who will take a look at this problem?
