Firefox equation rendering problem in Ubuntu Dapper Drake

Bug Description

For example, look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fisher_information. The section starting \mathcal is a complicated equation which is not being rendered by Firefox.

Opera 9 under Dapper Drake (on the same machine) does render it correctly, and Firefox under Windows also handles it properly.

I should have included a location reference just in case you don't see the problem, though so far it seems consistently reproducible. The first unrendered equation appears after "can be written".

Also, I checked with IE (*ugh*) and IE also renders it correctly. Only failure here is Firefox under Ubuntu.

In the page source, that equation is simply a .png (http://upload.wikimedia.org/math/3/a/7/3a7ad7c610d08c1039ef069c557befa5.png) with alt text; it's not using any fancy equation rendering support in Firefox ...

I'm not a different Ubuntu machine now, and I don't see the problem, either. What it was displaying on that machine was "\mathcal..." and a whole bunch of other notation that was pretty obviously a mathematical notation system rather like TeX or LaTeX. It was doing that for all of the equations on the page.

Actually, looking at it now on this machine, I see that what I saw was almost surely the ALT text for the equation graphic, so what was really going on is that the PNG file was somehow blocked on that particular machine and Firefox was just displaying the ALT text.

Now why Opera was able to get the PNG is kind of mysterious... Anyway, right now it looks like one of those weird things. If it persists tomorrow, then I'm going to be very suspicious, but I think it was just a temporary weirdness, and I'm sorry to have troubled you--though I'm very impressed by the speed of your responses.

Well, I hope that someone else finds this thread and benefits from my mistake and doesn't just repeat it in a new guise. Problem was that I had somehow changed the image display settings on that particular machine--to only download images from the same server. Those images are coming from a different server within wikipedia.

Apart from making the silly mistake, I plead being misled by the display of the ALT text. I had leapt to the the conclusion that the equation I was seeing was not being rendered--but if leaping to conclusions was an Olympic sport, I'd have a chest full of gold medals.

The status of this bug should be changed to something like "user failed to check his Firefox settings".
