Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

Everything tears. I can see the tearing when I am watching video, especially when there are fast moving objects displayed. I can see tearing when I move windows (Compiz enabled).

I enabled EXAVSync, but it made no difference. Enabling "Sync to VBlank" in ccsm had no effect either.

As you can see in XorgLog.txt, I use a radeon graphics card (Radeon HD 4670).

I updated xserver-xorg-video-ati to a current git snapshot 1b7e9a2e [1] and the tearing bug was fixed. I cherry picked "r6xx/r7xx: implement EXA vline support" [2] and updated the xserver-xorg-video-ati package, but then the login fails and GDM reappears. So we have to cherry pick more than this single patch.

This bug was fixed in the package xserver-xorg-video-ati - 1:6.12.191-1ubuntu1

---------------
xserver-xorg-video-ati (1:6.12.191-1ubuntu1) lucid; urgency=low

  * Merge from Debian experimental (LP: #534026).
    + Fix tearing (LP: #514845).
  * Remaining changes:
    - 100_radeon-6.9.0-bgnr-enable.patch: Turn on option to allow xserver to
      skip drawing the root background window for the radeon driver. This
      will make the boot up sequence smoother by eliminating one flicker.
      TESTERS: Watch for corruption or other ill effects during boot up.
  * Add quilt to Build-Depends and call patch/unpatch target.
  * Add DEP-3 header to 100_radeon-6.9.0-bgnr-enable.patch.
