Bug Description

Many of these messages are basically cosmetic noise, the average time to resume is actually 8.2s when older hardware is taken into account. SATA reconnect alone is allowed to take up to 5s therefore a 5s timeout is wholy too low for this message. Upstream has upped this limit to 10s. Using this instance to track the integration of this upstream change into the lucid and karmic kernels.

If your resume is taking a very long time then please file a new bug.

This message is a warning related to "slow" resume from suspend. In this case it would be a delayed one from a previous suspend. This message generally is a false positive and upstream has recently upped the timeout from 5s to 10s to prevent these messages occuring spuriously. If you are able to suspend/resume ok then this can be ignored.

A person from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1307019 said that he had similar problems and said he reinstaled Karmic from scratch and now works perfectly well. Even tho I wont suggest this as a solution, I think its useful to people who dont have much on their Koala.

Thank you for your response and marking my submission as duplicate. Although it is probably an actual duplicate, I just thought I'd express some of the differences on my system:
1) Coming out of suspend works just fine (and pretty fast). It's going into suspend that takes an unusual long time: Ubuntu goes to a blank screen but then an empty console appears (cursor blinking) and stays there for ~20-30 seconds before it goes to suspend. As a comparison, Windows 7 goes to suspend (well, "sleep") in at most half the time it takes Ubuntu to do so on the same machine.
2) When coming out of suspend, the screen is dimmed, even if the laptop was plugged the whole time, which would indicate some sort of actual error, not just a false timeout.

Still, the laptop works just fine after coming out of suspend. This laptop had "sleeping problems" before in Kubuntu 9.04 (now switched to regular Ubuntu 9.10) - it used to not be able to access the hard disk when coming out of suspend and had to be hard rebooted.

My bug is bug 467657

Hi yossisynett,

The warning reported here typically indicates that it took longer for your system to resume from suspend than expected. I believe there is a 5 sec barrier which your system likely exceeded. Typically you'll see something similar to "PM: resume devices took 8.664 seconds" in your dmesg output when this happens. A patch to prevent this warning has been applied via bug 464552. As a result I'm marking this as a duplicate to bug 464552. Please continue to track this issue at that report. Thanks!

Hello,
just to add an info. Since I deactivated the EXA acceleration in
xorg.conf, changing it according tu bug 429295 with "renderaccel" "off"
i have no problems anymore when resuming from suspend. Somehow it was a
dupe in my case...

Currently the "device" section in my xorg.conf looks like this

Section "Device"
 Identifier "Configured Video Device"
 Option "RenderAccel" "off"
# Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
EndSection

Maybe this can help someone.

Now it working properly and I haven't a lot of problems only very specific.
I updated Ubuntu and now it all work good. Only some times Compiz can fall
down, but I just restarting session.
It felling down because of LuxRender 0.6. And ones it fell down because

Could you try booting with 'no_console_suspend' on your kernel command line in grub, then switching to VT-1 (ctrl-alt-F1) and loging in there, then using the command below to suspend:

    sudo pm-suspend

On resume do you get any messages on the console there. If so could you take a picture of them etc.

Could anyone who finds that they are able to suspend/resume with the 2.6.31-14.48 kernel and not with the 2.6.31-15.49 kernel please try the testing steps below and report back on this bug.

Could you install the kernel at the URL below and re-test the suspend/resume. This kernel backs out the change introduced by this bug, but is otherwise identicle to the 2.6.31-15.49 kernel in -proposed:

    http://people.canonical.com/~apw/lp464552-karmic/test1/

If that kernel also fails to suspend/resume could you also try the kernel at the URL below and re-test suspend/resume again. This kernel backs out a different change from this update (a USB status change):

In all cases we are insterested in the reports of both success and failure. Where possible include a dmesg output with your report. Thanks in advance.

commit 8bf095f8b62c5fdfe55a8c95be775ea62be7bc10
Author: Kees Cook <email address hidden>
Date: Sun Oct 18 09:16:44 2009 -0700

UBUNTU: SAUCE: [x86] fix report of cs-limit nx-emulation
    BugLink: http://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/454285

which does have only effect for i386 non-pae kernels, in which case the system accidentally assumes it has NX capabilities. I will update the other bug accordingly.

@Simon, to check whether you are affected the same: if you got a cpu which has no nx mentioned in cat /proc/cpuinfo but claims "NX (Execute Disable) protection: active" in dmesg, this is wrong. You might want to try the quick test kernel I put to http://people.canonical.com/~smb/bug464552. If that helps we can put this bug into "verification done".

I just tested with 2.6.31-14.48 and 2.6.31-15.50 and the dmesg contains "Using x86 segments limits to approximate NX protection". I don't know if it can help but I also tested with 2.6.31-15.50 generic-pae and I have the same NX message.

If you still need me to run some tests just ask. Thank you very much.

Should I test something? ... I'm not involved in Kernel-Development or

Hello, and thanks for the support. I am however confused as to why I am
getting so many messages from you and your associates. If there is a way
that I could stop recieving these messages, some direction would be
appreciated. Thanks.

I don't see where to unsubscribe!
I'm also using Launchpad Beta, apparently, and don't see where to change
that either (not under My Account, it seems).

---> Should I change from "This bug affects me too" to "No, it doesn't
affect me" ???
Is that the same as un-subscribing?

Seems pretty vague, if you ask me...
Thanks!

The list of subscribers (which has the Unsubscribe button on the top) is after the Duplicates list. Since this bug has an enormous amount of duplicates, this is a bit down the page.

Note that if you have real problems with suspend/resume (not only the timeout warning) your report is a false duplicate so you should un-duplicate it instead of unsubscribing. Otherwise your issue will be ignored since the timeout warning bug has been fixed.

HI all.

It seems this was fixed for me since kernel 2.6.31-15-generic
(#50-Ubuntu SMP Tue Nov 10 14:53:52 UTC 2009)
I haven't seen warnings again after the upgrade.

Thanks all.

I'm a novice at ubuntu. When one clicks on a crash report in the top panel,
one is told that it would be helpful to file a report and when you click on
yes, the computer does everything. This may be why you are still getting
emails, but I am making a wild guess. Another problem has emerged on my
computer and this may be what was causing my problem. I am also receiving
emails. My last 2 lines in my emails have an unsubscribe link, don't yours?
Or did it not work for you? Good luck.

Many of these messages are basically cosmetic noise, the average time
to resume is actually 8.2s when older hardware is taken into account.
SATA reconnect alone is allowed to take up to 5s therefore a 5s

limit to 10s. Using this instance to track the integration of this
upstream change into the lucid and karmic kernels.
