Bug Description

I've recently built an Ubuntu MID machine from the Karmic netboot image (http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/karmic/main/installer-i386/current/images/netboot/netboot.tar.gz) version 20081029ubuntu70. Although the installation appears to complete successfully upon reboot no GUI is shown.

Logging into the system the ubuntu-mid package is not installed. An attempt to install it fails as the cheese-hildon dependency cannot be met from the current Karmic repositories.

I've tested the new 1.144 package by a complete rebuild of the test machine from the netboot image. As before, the installation succeeds without error. However after the initial Ubuntu splash it again drops to a text login prompt. Logging in I find that the ubuntu-mid package is not installed again. I can now install it from the command line but this forces the removal of GRUB 2 (grub-pc) and XFCE Panel (xfce4-panel), installing GRUB (grub) instead. After a reboot nothing has changed and it still boots to a text login prompt.

Attempting to manually restart the GUI give the following result:

root@m300:/# etc/init.d/ubuntu-mid-default-settings restart
start: Unknown job: session

Would you prefer me to open another bug as this one is Cheese related or shall we continue to sort out the dependency issues in here? Let me know if there is more information I can collect to help?

@Ian: basically ubuntu-mid / the MID seed has not been updated this cycle, nobody is working actively on this seed at this time. Because we're two weeks before release, there's little to be done to rescue it, but I can consider updating the meta-package since it's not used in any image build anyway.

Ideally, we'd have one bug per issue as to discuss them separately; you initially reported the package was not installable, that should be fixed; now concerning the GRUB Legacy dependency, I can drop it I guess since it was for lpia which is deprecated as well.

Concerning xfce4-panel, there;s a direct conflict between ubuntu-mid and xfce4-panel. This is because ubuntu-mid pulls thunar-volman for automounting, and hence thunar (direct dependency) but thunar Recommends: xfce4-panel. To avoid this recommends being dragged in and pulling the Xfce stack, a conflict was added.

So not much we can do to allow for xfce4-panel without revisiting the full MID seed.

Concerning your upstart issue, that's an entirely different issue and should be filed separately; I think the upstart job is not compatible with the new upstart.

@Loïc: Thanks for letting me know the status of the MID build. I wonder whether it should be removed from the list of options on the netboot image if it isn't supported in Karmic, perhaps?

I'm not sure whether the xfce4-panel removal is an issue or not. As you say the ubuntu-mid-default-settings script is currently broken with regards to Upstart, so I've logged LP #456510 for that.

Thanks for filing the other bug; I pushed a mobile-meta dropping the grub dep and bug #456561 about dropping the MID task
