Well, this is too techy. What kind of rule is this talking about? Can the user do anything about it?
Perhaps this should simply say: "Ubuntu does not support the device yet. (optionally: report a bug on launchpad)"

The mobile broadband page should mention a workaround for USB modems with flash drive mode.
Some 3G USB modems have a default mode, in which modem device is recognized by the system as a flash drive. This flash drive contains Windows drivers. To change device to a modem users have to either:
1) eject the flash drive
2) use the modem-modeswitch tool manually
For example see Bug #281335.
If a modem device is still not recognized then a bug should be filed against udev.

Ubuntu documentation should mention that some 3G USB modems might require to eject/unmount the flash drive with drivers before using.

After looking into this, I see that the udev-extras package is only available in Jaunty, so this documentation is outdated and incorrect. Does anybody have suggestions on how to troubleshoot mobile wireless connections?

I've added some simple instructions based on this report, including directions for filing a bug against the udev package. Fix committed to Lucid dev branch, rev 471.
