Bug Description

Users who are trying out the most recent beta are unable to get to X.
Instead they have reported a blank screen/reboot.

This is because several services that *should* start, for whatever reason aren't running at all.

List of services are (in order of execution):
- dbus
- hal
- gdm

Booting into Text-Only mode and running the following currently works around the issue.
sudo restart dbus
sudo start hal
sudo start gdm

Now, since these three services have been converted to an upstart service in Karmic, am going to assume that this is an issue with upstart, and not the init.d scripts.

Just booted plain ubuntu daily-live 2009-10-12 from usb-stick via grub2 loopmount. Booting like that worked well for daily images last week but stopped working with iirc 2009-10-10. Today booting stopped again at a text console. Doing
sudo restart dbus
sudo start hal
sudo start gdm
as described in the bug description did indeed complete the boot and everything seems now fine on first look.

I just tried (again) to boot ubuntu daily-live 2009-20-11 on cd. It also stopped at a terminal prompt.
sudo restart dbus
sudo start hal
sudo start gdm
did bring the boot to a successful conclusion again.

I attached the /var/log (still never quite sure which logs are interesting) from an earlier boot with this cd. They are taken while the system is sitting at the console. I did not restart services that time.

This was with an acer extensa 5630z. Comment #1 was with an extensa 5635z. I do not believe that this bug is hardware specific.
It seems to be exclusive to live-images however. I have seen nothing of the kind on installed systems.

Bug 448981 seems to be the same one.
I attached /var/log/syslog in its upacked form here for convenience.

Please don't add an upstream bug task without some justification. Nothing here suggests an Upstart bug, simply an issue with your distribution's configuration

Not to be rude, but please do not mark our bugs (zenix) as invalid.

Second, it this is "an issue with your distribution's configuration" as you claim, tell me why does the ubuntu desktop not boot

(daily build 10/11/2009) ?

This bug was reported "upstream" appropriately and many of us looked at the boot logs and upstart was the best we could come up with.

Please do not "kill the messenger".

I did not mark your (Zenix) as Invalid. I marked the upstream upstart
task as Invalid.

Unknown, file a bug on Ubuntu? *NOT* the upstream upstart package.

What you said was

"Nothing here suggests an Upstart bug, simply an issue with your distribution's configuration"

What I think you should have done is:

1. If it is not an upstart bug, you should have provided feedback so that people can improve their bug reports. How are we to know it is not a problem with upstart ? The system does not boot and there are no logs.

I assume you know upstart quite well, but that is no excuse to treat those who do not the way you did. The way you responded to this bug report is frankly arrogant and, IMO, inappropriate.

2. I linked Ubuntu bug reports above, so you make a mistake. It is a problem with Ubuntu, and specifically it seems mountall. So again, IMO it is inappropriate for you to treat this project in such a condescending disrespectful manor.

These are bug reports and people are trying to help improve Ubuntu. You really should treat them with a little more respect. Just because you are a developer does not mean you have the right to behave this way. If you took the time to educate , the quality of bug reports would improve. If you do not want to take the time, best not to respond at all then come across the way you did.

This is now released in the package repositories and on ubuntu daily-live 2009-10-13. Worked for me on 5 boots live and installed on two different notebooks.
I therefore set the mountall part of this bug here to "fix released" like the "core" bug 448981 already is.

Zenix testing remains to be done by someone else.

Thanks all :-)
