Seems to be related to initramfs maybe. Definitely not related to xsplash.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 440475

This will help us to find and resolve the problem. Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your bug report. Thanks in advance!

I also have this problem with the annoying message: xxxxxxx[sdc] Assuming drive cache: write through

I tried also the apport-collect 440475 and nothing happens, I followed all the steps and then I get to the authorization screen and the whole thing stops there, nothing happens :-(

Please do not close the bug report but look for a solution or another way to report the details of this annoyance,

Thanks a lot!

I assume the message isn't really an error and it certainly isn't something the user should worry about. However it pops up over the bootsplash which might lead to some confusion. Likely the log level is just set to high for the message.

I see this when inserting my usb connected harddrive before turning my machine on.

Hi leighman,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

A later version of the kernel is unlikely to stop this message appearing; the source code looks similar. The message can appear for various reasons. See the `defaults' label at the end of sd_read_cache_type() in http://lxr.linux.no/#linux+v2.6.34.1/drivers/scsi/sd.c#L1783. If none of the other messages in that function appear before it, then, from a quick skim, it looks like skip_ms_page_8 is set for the device.

Hmm, the Launchpad login method seems to be broken on apport. Is there a way to collect the report directly?

I can confirm the bug doesn't seem to cause any issues, it just throws messages onto the splash screen on boot. I have a NAS that uses both esata and USB, when connected via esata I did not see these messages, just when using USB. But the disks mount so this seems more of an annoyance than anything.

Happy to help if I can....
