Bug Description

One is for kde, the other for gnome. This should be cleared up somehow. This isn't such a bad thing as one of the apps gui's will use gtk, the other will use qt. This stops the need for installing qt on gnome or gtk on kde. A simple script to work out the current DE to work out which one to install is much more user friendly.

affects: ubuntu → software-store (Ubuntu)

Are there any other applications which have the same issue? If it's an issue just for this particular application, just adding " (for Ubuntu)" and " (for Kubuntu)" to the names in app-install-data (but not in the Applications menu itself!) would be enough.

SMplayer also is listed twice, because it installs 2 mimetype handlers and 2 .desktop in the system: one for the program itself and one for adding the file to the queque. This is not a qt/gtk version, it's the same package, but with 2 different names. This can lead to confusion an bugs in the app center.

Other applications with the same issue include Jockey, GDebi, and Qalculate.

I've added an "unresolved issue" to the specification that we need to work out how to emphasize the variant of an application best suited to your current environment.

This is partly fixed now by simply displaying the package name after the appname, so it will be:
GDebi package installer (gdebi)
GDebi package installer (gdebi-kde)

now. Not perfect, but better than just showing idential ones.

This bug was fixed in the package software-center - 0.4.4

---------------
software-center (0.4.4) karmic; urgency=low

  * debian/rules:
    - cleanup, we do not need python-central, all the python code is
      in a private dir
  * softwarecenter/view/appview.py:
    - display the package name in parenthesis if the application name
      appears multiple times in the database (e.g. for a generic name
      like "Terminal") LP: #434625
  * softwarecenter/app.py, softwarecenter/view/viewswitcher.py:
    - automatically switch back to the previous view if the progress
      view is empty and the user has not navigated away manually
      (LP: #431907)
  * po/ro.po:
    - added Romanian translation (thanks to Alex Eftimie)

There is not much that app-install-data can do here, I close the task.
