Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Sorry if this is a duplicate. Feel free to mark it as invalid as it's related to the poor web designers from apple.

I just came accross a problem when trying to play trailers from http://www.apple.com/trailers like

http://www.apple.com/trailers/weinstein/inglouriousbasterds/

Even with ubuntu-restricted-extras installed, trying to play standard content will lead totem-mozilla to search for a codec for text/html content whioch abviously fail ( I guess that is some kind of apple warning in html that itunes is not installed )

trying HD content ( which seems binary mov playlist ) just do nothing.

Again, that's not Ubuntu faulted , that's apple one. But people just think it's ubuntu fault ..... Sad!

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04
Package: firefox-3.0 3.0.14+build2+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.9.04.1
ProcEnviron:
 LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8
 SHELL=/bin/bash
SourcePackage: firefox-3.0
Uname: Linux 2.6.28-15-generic i686

So I quickly find out what was wrong.

Apple is restricting through the UserAgent access to the files on its server. ( Maybe it doesn't make enough money to pay the BW :-) )

So it's all explain here : http://www.hd-trailers.net/blog/2009/08/20/direct-download-links-from-apple-are-not-working/

The only solution I see, When Totem-mozilla launch in place of quicktime, it should maybe try to send a useragent corresponding to quicktime ?

This is not a firefox bug as posted already. The idea of having totme-* fix the problem (not real sure if we can) i dont know the license behind Quicktime but the package has been updated to correct one and we will let totem devs decide how to pursue this

affects: firefox-3.0 (Ubuntu) → totem (Ubuntu)

not likely now, karmic beta is this week and efforts are focussed on that and there has been few request for a backport in 5 months for jaunty so it's not likely to be worked now

From reading this bug report I was under the impression that this was fixed in Karmic but from my experience this problem still exists in Karmic. The Apple trailers work with gecko-mediaplayer but completely fail with totem-mozilla! Why can't totem-mozilla play the trailers when gecko-mediaplayer can? I currently have a solution in place by using gecko-mediaplayer but would like to use Totem so here is hoping that this is resolved soon? I understand that this is not a "Totem" or "Ubuntu" bug per se but I also figure that is gecko-mediaplayer can make it work that totem-mozilla should be able to as well?

Thanks,
Gord

As noted in the previous comment, this is still valid for karmic.

Playing movie trailers from the Apple web site with totem-mozilla works fine here on Ubuntu 9.10 "Karmic Koala".

Uname: Linux 2.6.31-19-generic i686
Packages: totem 2.28.2-0ubuntu3
                  libgstreamer0.10-0 0.10.25-2
                  gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg 0.10.9-1
                  gstreamer0.10-plugins-good 0.10.16-1ubuntu3
                  gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad 0.10.14-4ubuntu1
                  gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly 0.10.12-1

Can you update (if necessary) and try again?

I have a freshly installed copy of Karmic along with all of the same
versions of software installed as listed below. When trying to play a
trailer (The Crazies) on the Apple Trailers site I get their
JavaScript window where the movie should be played but there is a
message there instead telling me to install quicktime.

Thanks,
Gord

It actually depends on the trailer you try.

in karmic , the user-agent trick made most of them work. But now Apple added onother check on reported QT version through javascript. however the Totem QT plugin is well made so it reports a recent version. So it should work ..

Here is one example that don't work and thus might check for plugin version http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/fox/theateam/

i really don't see why apple do all this crap detection ... ( a bit like france2.fr ..) Maybe they want to force windows user to install Ithunes even if they had for exemple a working plugin such as VLC.

I don't see why we should spend too much time debugging/mimicing their Quicktime/website crap ....

Rotten apple ...

Well, there is a problem. I don't know how this fix works, but quicktime.com still gives me ad for Quicktime instead of playing it after upgrading to 2.30.0-0ubuntu3. I can't see many reasons why Apple does it - they don't have and they don't plan to release Quicktime for Linux - but this is quite saddening and no Ubuntu or Gstreamer fault at all. Almost only reason I can think about that they have lot of "leecher" tools and different players connecting to site and trying playing trailers and overmaxing their resources, so they have to limit this access. Still, not very nice.
