Bug Description

Hi

since yesterday the package libstdc++5 is removed from Karmic - so no way to install w32codecs on newly installed machines:

1:3.3.6-17ubuntu1
Deleted in karmic-release (Reason: (From Debian) RoM; obsolete)

Can the dependency be modified to libstdc++6 like in the w64codecs package?

Thanks for your bug report. Changing the dependency to libstdc++6 won't work, I'll have to remove the codecs that explicitely require libstdc++5.

Is there a resolution to this? I just installed 9.10 beta today (10/09/09) and it is still giving this error when attempting to install w32codecs.

This is already fixed in our karmic package.

Great, that's awesome..

Is there some way other than the typical apt-get or aptitude update/upgrade that I need to use to get this? I installed the new 9.10 beta this morning and have done a complete aptitude update/upgrade and it still doesn't allow installing the w32codecs.

Thanks for the help!!

Yeah, simply pick up the deb package on the mirror (inside http://packages.medibuntu.org/pool/non-free/w/w32codecs/).

Anyway, if you've already installed w32codecs from our repository, could you paste here the result of:
apt-cache policy w32codecs
?
Thanks.

No, unfortunately it will not install. Keeps giving that error. No worries... I'll go back to 9.04 and just wait until 9.10 is released and has been out a while.. This is really strange though.. I downloaded the 9.10 beta, updated/upgraded fine and then everything installed except for the codecs with that broken dependency issue.

Thanks for trying to help though!

Hi jackmetal - did you update your /etc/apt/sources.list to read "deb http://packages.medibuntu.org/ karmic free non-free" - if this line still contains jaunty instead of karmic it won't work

Hi Claudio, Thanks for the response. I haven't checked, but I'll go look now. Would a clean install of karmic beta list jaunty?

I'll check and let you know.

thanks again!

I am trying to install the w32 codecs package from here > http://packages.medibuntu.org/karmic/w32codecs.html for Karmic Koala. Gettting error message depend on libstdc++5. Is their another package I can use to go around this issue.

That's because one mirror seems to be completely out-of-date... (you can see that at the bottom of the page: if it contains "Last update: Sun, 30 Aug 2009 04:26:35 +0200", then you just reached an out-of-date mirror, try to refresh the page).

Direct links to the debs (for karmic only):
- http://packages.medibuntu.org/pool/non-free/w/w32codecs/w32codecs_20071007-0medibuntu5_i386.deb (for i386)
- http://packages.medibuntu.org/pool/non-free/w/w32codecs/w32codecs_20071007-0medibuntu5_lpia.deb (for lpia)

Well I installed from the debs above ok, but still no go. I have had no luck with dvd since installing Karmic netbook remix. Just slow and continual improvement. This latest update did get me further, but playback is badly broken up and media players usually crash after w while. Moovidia reported an unknown GStreamer error. vlc plays back all broken up and then crashes. and Totem just sits there, when you select play from the title screen loop.

Any pointers?
