Bug Description

https://launchpad.net/bzr-explorer

It would be good if bzr-explorer was packaged, and probably recommended when you install bzr.

Just started working on this myself tonight. I guess at the same time as Elliot, I hadn't seen that he was taking this. Anyways, lp:~andrewsomething/bzr-explorer/debian contains working packaging. Feel free to use anything I did. Let's talk about where to go from here (i.e a PPA and getting it into Debian so it can be synced into Lucid).

Hi Andrew! Fantastic that you worked on this. I got 99% there on Friday night but was trying to use python-support and the new debhelper 7 stuff for the first time and got stuck right at the end. Since you have a working package and even added an xpm file, lets go with your package. For the PPA, I'd imagine this should go into one of the bzr ppas.

I went with cdbs and python-central. I just updated my branch to build against upstream rev 311 instead of the 0.8.3 release. It only contains the debian dir, but builddeb will automatically pull the upstream source. Just run "bzr bd" (or "bzr bd -S" if you want a source package) to build it.

Is there a better place for this to live rather than under my namespace? Should we create a bzr-explorer packagers team or move it to bzr-explorer-dev? Is their someone on the ~bzr team that would like to handle uploads to ppa:bzr/ppa or should I apply for membership there?

I also see that you did some work in your branch outside of /debian to get the .desktop file translated. I didn't address that with my work as I was looking at it from a downstream packaging perspective. That's certainly something that shouldn't get abandoned, and hopefully committed upstream.

Also, I'm subscribing Debian/Ubuntu Bazaar Maintainers for some guidance on moving forward with getting this into Debian.

I've made you a member of bzr-explorer-dev, and created a ppa, so you should be able to upload to
https://launchpad.net/~bzr-explorer-dev/+archive/ppa

Send me a mail (on the mailing list) and I'll copy it to the bzr ppa, but apply for membership any way, so that I don't have to keep doing it :-)

Thanks Gary! I've moved the packaging to lp:~bzr-explorer-dev/bzr-explorer/debian

As it seems the 0.9 release is pending, I'll wait for that until I upload to the PPA.

Andrew,

Can you update the Overview page to reference the PPA please?

It would also be good to get the Linux install instructions updated. See http://doc.bazaar-vcs.org/explorer/en/install-linux.html. The website is a bzr branch (of course): lp:bzr-explorer-website. Can you submit a merge proposal with better text for that too?

I'd like to put it into the ~bzr (and ~bzr-beta-ppa) team, so that
just adding that one archive will get people all the current software.

As discussed on the bzr-explorer-dev list, we wanted to get some
testing of the initial upload before pushing it out to a larger
audience. It's now been in the PPA for a while without any reports of
packaging issues, and I've had the package further reviewed in order
to get it into Debian (where it's now in the NEW queue). So I'm
satisfied...

Feel free to copy the packages over into the ~bzr PPA at this point.
garyvdm had previously offered, so I can contact him if you don't want
to do it yourself.

Thanks!

OK, but in the long term it's going to be more scalable to have it
uploaded there directly, isn't it?

Sure, I've just applied for membership to ~bzr-beta-ppa. ~bzr is a
Restricted team, so someone would have to add me. That way I can
upload to the PPAs myself. I won't take any offense if I'm not
accepted due to other privileges membership in those teams confers,
but in that case you'll have to work out something in house.
