Bug Description

Binary package hint: caspar

Tried to boot the Alpha 5 Live-CD (desktop, i386) in safe graphics mode, but it failed (have to boot using it or my defective GPU freezes the system).

Manually adding "xforcevesa" to the kernel line didn't work either.

I checked the ISO's hash and ran the CD check - no errors were found.

Alpha 6: same problem. Maybe connected to this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nv/+bug/385658

summary: - Alpha 5: "Safe Graphics Mode" not working
+ Live CD: "Safe Graphics Mode" not working

From what I know of the -nv bug I'm doubtful bug 385658 is the cause of this one.

You mentioned "defective GPU" - can you expand on that? Is the hardware itself broken?

If this might be an X issue, please attach your Xorg.0.log and output from `lspci -vvnn` and `dmesg`.

So the way this used to work is scripts/casper-bottom/20xconfig called casper-reconfigure xserver-xorg.

The postinst for xserver-xorg detected xforcevesa on /proc/cmdline and created an xorg.conf with vesa in it

summary: - Live CD: "Safe Graphics Mode" not working
+ "Safe Graphics Mode" doesn't force VESA

Hi,

I'm having this trouble on an Asus M2N-PV-DVI (it has onboard Nvidia 7050). I tried the following from the LiveCD with the corresponding results:

1. Regular boot without changing any parameters - Screen with green lines all over. Cannot switch to virtual terminal but SysRq works.
2. Boot in Safe Graphics Mode - Screen with green lines all over. Everything as above.
3. Boot with boot parameter 'single', then edit xorg.conf to select vesa driver, then startx - Ubuntu boots.

I am using the ubuntu-9.10-desktop-1386 ISO downloaded on Oct 19, 3.30 PM GMT approximately, if that helps.

And this was a _daily_ Live CD (from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/)?

I have a continuing failure to start X (with or without "safe graphics mode") with my Acer Aspire One, which I originally reported as https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/438263 .
