'gedit Text Editor' is the only item in the whole menu that starts with a lower-case character (even iBus doesn't). As consistency seems important according to the upstream bug report, I can't follow how this change qualifies as an acceptable fix.

For consistency,
in order to match "gedit Text Editor",
please rename some others,
From Application|Accesories,
As follows:

"gcalctool Calculator"
"baobab Disk Usage Analyzer"
"gedit Text Editor" <-- done already, it looks nice

After all, this is what
Appears in the Help|About
When you click on it,
For each application
In question.

Please try
and you'll see.

thanks,
Dan.

I'd like to point out that gedit shows itself as "gedit" in lots of common places.
Here's a screenshot.
I think this bug should be reopened

I forgot to add that also the software store shows "gedit"

Sorry. Anyway it's quite strange that every other app work ok, and gedit is the only one with this strange behavior

you can read the upstream bug, gedit is one of the first application updated to have name= to be used as specified by the spec, the software name is indeed gedit, there is a new key for the menu title though that nautilus doesn't use

Dan Andreșan (danyer) wrote :

ok, if I understand comment #11 correctly, the bug is in nautilus: "Nautilus does not use the new key for the menu title"
Should I create the bug report, or it already exists?

could you open a new one and send to bugzilla.gnome.org too if possible?

@Sebastien,

I read the upstream bug. The reason why gedit item is displayed like this is because it has a X-GNOME-FullName in its .desktop file. This seems to be a feature, not a bug.

gcalctool and baobab are not displayed like
"gcaltool Calculator" and "baobab Disk Usage Analyzer" (like we see in their About box) because they don't have a X-GNOME-FullName.

Since gedit is one of the first application to use this new naming spec, I will live with it, but I would really not want to contribute to the "uglyfication" of the other two.

So I would not open a new bug :)

It also appears as gedit in GNOME-Do and the right-click menu as well as the open with... dialog. it doesn't say text editor in those places at all, just gedit. Should fix.

Not a bug, as apparently decided by GNOME.

So does this mean it won;t be fixed? It would be quite an odd feature for somebody who is just going to install Ubuntu for the first time. For those of us who explain the GNOME explanation its fine, but bottom line its going to stand out for people who don't care about the technicalities associated. maybe the use of the full name in the .desktop file can be delayed? its funny that a problem not in Jaunty shows up in Karmic.

I thought it was just the beta releases but i don't see how it was overlooked for the final release. anyway, hoping there's a fix for it soon.

This is a ubuntu-docs bug, as correctly written in Bug 442417.
I can still see this today in fully updated Lucid =>
"gedit Text Editor"
should be
"Text Editor"

"gedit Text Editor" is worse than "Text Editor (gedit)" and this is still worse than Gnome (former?) philosophy of not cluttering people's desktop. I suspect there are other solutions to the issue why they wanted to change naming in the first place.

For instance, why not leave the name "Text Editor" (actually this should point to a text editor of choice, defaulted to gedit, selected in System > Preferences) and have the tooltip appear as "Edit text files with gedit"?

Indeed, for me, implementing the "[app lower case] [friendly name]" naming scheme is to go back to the dark ages.
