Bug Description

As of the 6th of August, version 0.99.0 of matplotlib has been released. This contains one very nice feature, 3D plotting. The lack of this feature in 0.98 (and the unavailability of 0.99 for ubuntu) is the main reason I'm still using matlab.

Would it be possible to package this for karmic, or is the feature freeze already in place?

The feature freeze is in place since today. If you get a feature freeze exception for matplotlib, then I will update the package.

please look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FreezeExceptionProcess for a how this process works. I am setting this bug to incomplete, once you have the proper documentation, please set the bug to new.

Thanks!

If anyone is looking at working on this, Debian is already working on this (see below).

I'm aware of the new release, and I'm already working on updating
Debian package.

would be quite good if there were a package ready. Unsubscribing motu-release for the moment, please resubscribe if there's something to review.

Thanks,

I created a source package for 0.99 using the instructions from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PackagingGuide/Complete#Ingredients
I tried building the binary package using pbuilder but it failed (for both the current version and the new upstream version) pbuilder seemed to have trouble because it couldn't satisfy dependencies for the "pbuilder-satisfydepends-dummy" package.
I was able to build the package using dpkg-buildpackage, install it and run the tests in examples/tests.

For what it's worth, the main new features are:
- 3D plotting toolkit
- Axis grid toolkit
- Axis spine placement functionality

for details see: http://matplotlib.sourceforge.net/users/whats_new.html

I would like to see this package included in Karmic and am willing to help out although i'm probably a novice when it comes to package management.

It was just uploaded to Debian, so people should test with that package. Once you've got som positive test results, you can resubscribe motu-release.

Updated package is in Debian now and it's just a trivial merge for Ubuntu (most of our diff was incorporated). I did build, install, and test the package. I reran some data analysis scripts I've used and plotted with previous versions and they ran fine with 0.99.

My vote is we go ahead. +1

Scott, beat me to it. I built the debian package and it looks all good. Is it a merge or a sync? Attached is the diff of the debian and ubuntu /debian directories. It seems like all of our changes have been included upstream.

Here is the diff for Ubuntu:

matplotlib (0.99.0-1ubuntu1) karmic; urgency=low

  * Merge from Debian unstable (LP: #419885), remaining changes:
    - Explicitly depend on python-tk as workaround for LP #301007; drop these
changes if an auto backend discovery is implemented by upstream.
