Bug Description

Tested on Dell Mini 9, running Karmic Alpha 4 with Desktop Effects enabled.

When mouse cursor goes into busy (spinner) state, it starts flickering intensely, sometimes even turning into scan lines for split second.
This was a problem in Jaunty, too, in Karmic it seems to have worsen.

I realise this may not be a paper cut, but I'd like to bring this bug to everyone's attention and am hoping for it being fixable, as it severely impacts the perceived stability of Ubuntu's UI.

I'm setting your bug report to the Intel GPU drivers as it is probably a Xorg / GPU driver issue with the Intel drivers. Thanks for having reported it. Please keep in touch as other people may require additional information from you.

Hi mat.t.,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

I can also see animated cursors flicker, including occasional scan lines. I did not see them in Jaunty, unlike the reporter, but then again I may simply have not noticed. This is not on a netbook but a (proper?) laptop.

I've attached my $(lspci -vvnn) and /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

pablo, thanks for providing the files, however since both your symptoms and hardware seem different from the original reporters, I don't think it'll shed light on Mat's problem. I would instead encourage you to file your own bug report on the issue. That way we can ensure both your issue and Mat's (once he provides the requested info) will be investigated and solved.

Hi there, I'm running a GMA 950 and intel 945 GME chipset just like the Dell Mini 9, and I'm experiencing the same bug, here are the requested files.

I am running the xorg-edgers ppa and using KMS in hopes of fixing this issue, the update to the edgers release reduced the problem significantly, but there is definitely still flashing going on when an animated cursor is showing.

I can also provide video shot with my digital camera if that will be of help.

@Bryce: my symptoms do match those described by Mat, and I'm inclined to think that we are seeing the same bug on slightly different hardware.

@Bryce

The problem still exists (Karmic Alpha 6). It is a serious user experience issue, can we perhaps bump up the importance a bit?
I'll try to get you the files when I finally have quiet 5 mins :)

Cheers!

Attaching the video capture of the problem. The flickering is slightly less severe now, but still very obvious.

I can confirm the problem. There was no issue with 9.04, but after a fresh install of 9.10 alpha 6, I have the flickering as well.

I am running Compiz on an Intel Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller, but the flickering appears as early as the Ubuntu boot screen.

I am attaching my 'lspci -vvnn' output.

Thanks.

Hello,
I think I have the same bug, even though it should already be fixed. Maybe a regression? I'm running karmic (updated from jaunty) on a dell inspiron 1501, kernel 2.6.31-17-generic, fully updated. The cursor flickers heavily when the system is busy - not mattering which "image" the cursors has (text, arrow, spinning wheel). I first thought it is because I installed "unclutter", but I have added the -noevents flag and it still happens. If I should open a new bug, please let me know. But I have the impression it's the same bug as this one.
I am attaching the output of lspci -vvnn and the /var/log/Xorg.0.log.
Regards.
