Bug Description

Binary package hint: screen-resolution-extra

When setting up a dual-screen with the Gnome "Display" capplet, a VirtualDesktop size is set in xorg.conf. This is by default 2048x2048.

For some situations, this makes sense, for example older intel graphics adapters could not handle textures larger than this size, so compiz would not work if you go beyond this size. There's bugs about that, I don't know if it's fixed for newer GPU's by Intel.

However my ATI X1400 with the open source drivers handles it just fine. Horizontally, 2048 is too small for almost all situations i run into. Basically, as soon as one screen is larger than XGA, your setup will be wider than 2048.

screen-resolution-extra should be smarter about which VirtualDesktop size it chooses, depending on the graphics adapter installed.

at the very least it could notify the user if a fallback to 2048x2048 was selected and mention that xorg.conf should be changed manually if the user thinks it is safe.
better use a black or whitelist to decide when to default to 2048
And ideally it would apply the mode change in the current X session and ask the user in a timed dialog whether to make the change persistent or not :)
