Bug Description

PLEASE NOTE:
This bug should only be about the disappearing-text-on selection issue ("bug a" below), for the other selection issues see Bug #33288

---

Original description:

I have found two problems with marking/copying text in the following .pdf document:
http://include.adm.gu.se/cms_stuff/0/10/96/GU-kurser.pdf

* Go to page 24 (evince numbering).
* Look at the bottom of the third column.
* Mark the next last row from "HT06" and forward 4 words.

Bug a:
Now the word "fart" (this means "speed" in Swedish so don't laugh!) disappears.

Bug b:
Right click on the marked words and the two other columns gets marked. This text is also copied if you try to copy with CTRL-C or copy in the pop-up menu.

I use the latest update of dapper.

I can confirm this:
Steps to reproduce:
1. Download http://include.adm.gu.se/cms_stuff/0/10/96/GU-kurser.pdf
2. Open GU-kurser.pdf within evince.
3. Go to page 24.
4. Scroll to the bottom of the page and in the 3rd column try and highlight "HT06, ½-fart" on the penultimate line.

Expected result:
Background of HT06, ½-fart to change colour as it is highlighted.

Actual results:
-fart becomes invisible as text is highlighted.

Additional Information
Pressing the right mouse button after this causes text in other columns to suddenly highlight itself. The text can be correctly highlighted and copied in acroread 7.0.1-0.0.ubuntu1 .

Version Information:
evince 0.5.2-0ubuntu1
libpoppler1 0.5.1-0ubuntu5
libpoppler1-glib 0.5.1-0ubuntu5
poppler-utils 0.5.1-0ubuntu5

Please describe one issue by bug, that's not manageable other way. The multi columns issue is know upstream: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=325457

Do you have an example of the other issue with a non-muli-column pdf? If that's a case could you open another bug about it?

i can see that too in a personal .pdf i have, some greek letters desappear, or they change value as they become marked. but when they are copied, the original value is pasted!
the only problem seems to be on marked text! which messes up everything. from disappearing to changing letters....it's an odd one...

This is a very annoying issue. You see, every time I want searcha reference online I have to type the complicated thing by hand!

This bugger bug is prevailing ever since I start using linux 2 years ago. When you say its already upstream does it mean the gnome guys are responsible for it now and all we can do is wait?

Patch series with a lot of corrections are available in the upstream linked poppler bug.
I'm going to see if I can test these and hopefully get some ppa-action going. Possibly even SRU.

Testing packages for the upstream patches, for ubuntu 9.10, are available from my "poppler" ppa, (nil safety included).

_rough_ debdiff attached (e.g. patches are not in upstream master yet (as far as I know), changelog might be a tad bit too verbose). But it would definitely be great if we could get this into Lucid at least.

Hmm, seems like I was mistaken at a point or two, the correct bug report for the _selection copy_ of text would be https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/poppler/+bug/33288

However the invisible-text-on-selection is likely a separate bug, which would be appropriate to keep here.

My patch does not solve the invisible-text-on-selection issue, hence removing it here (it does however solve the column issue, and are still available for that purpose from my ppa and from above mentioned bug).

Also invalidating the poppler tasks for this reason.

This bug appears frequently on russian pdfs.

Some more example:
On the attached pdf Evince adds 'e' symbol to the end of every word. Also, it adds many other symbols when the text is in >=2 columns.
PDF file example-russian-pdf.pdf and two screenshots are attached.

Another one:

Try to select "2009–2010" in 2 or 3 paragraph. It converts to "2009" and 5 rectangles.

Confirmed in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid .

When highlighting symbols most of them are mismatched or appear blank.
When pasting copied text from PDF's , some letters/symbols are of different orientation or left blank.
