I tried creating a new Gtalk account in empathy -- it connects without an issue.

Compared to the account auto imported from Pidgin, the account that empathy created when I selected google talk had these differences:

Server: talk.google.com
port: 5223

checked: ignore ssl certificate errors
checked: use old SSL

the account imported from pidgin has:

checked: encryption requried (TLS/SSL)
server: blank
port: 5222

If i add the server name (talk.google.com) to the imported gtalk account from pidgin, I am able to connect, with all other settings intact:

checked: encryption requried (TLS/SSL)
server: talk.google.com
port: 5222

summary: - [karmic] empathy not connecting to gtalk servers

issue in launchpad, http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=586329 but the status is still NEW for LP bug watch. Remove it and force it manually.

Also, the package bug is just fix commited and not released yet. The package containing the fix will be hopefully uploaded in few hours in karmic.

I am facing this again with latest updates on kamric beta from last night. My existing gtalk account stopped working. So I added a new one, but that still did not work. I had to manually go into the gtalk account settings and change the server to talk.google.com and things are now working.
If the standard google-talk drop down when adding a new account in empathy can't take care of adding talk.google.com on the server section then why is it there?

I have this problem too. I fix it by deleting the "empathy" string at resource field, and typing a space at the field. apparently, when you erase it the client put it again. Dont know if this solve the problem, but worked for me:)

I'm still having this problem as of right now, on my fully up to date x64 karmic installation, upgraded from jaunty. Adding "talk.google.com" into the server box fixes the problem, as suggested by one of the previous posters.
