Bug Description

I run Karmic on an Asus G1S.
I did the following to get rid of pulseaudio.

sudo apt-get purge pulseaudio

and re-booted.

My application, which had not worked before even with pasuspender or pasdp, now works fine, but I get this error message every time I boot.

(/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256)

I did a system update on Ubuntu 8.10 and rebooted.

After the installation, the system reported a broken package with "libgconf2-4".

Hence I restarted my computer thinking that I could install the broken package afterward.

Now when I boot up my system this error message appears:

(/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256)

And the whole desktop doesn't load (i.e. no menu bars, no icons, no desktop background), just a beige colored screen.

I got the same message after upgrading to karmic, running the sanity check from a tty when the error appeared showed that
/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.system
was missing. After creating the folder with drwxr-xr-x permissions the message disappeared.
After upgrading a different pc I got the same message but oddly enough with a different error code iirc. This time the folder existed but had wrong permissions:
drwx------
