I think this call to parent's finalize should be at the end of the function, not the beginning.

This bug was fixed in the package indicator-messages - 0.1.6-0ubuntu1

---------------
indicator-messages (0.1.6-0ubuntu1) jaunty; urgency=low

  * New upstream version
    * Patch from Cody Russell to fix LP: #359018 by correctly implementing
      the finalize functions.

  * New upstream version
    * Applied the same fixes as Cody Russell's patch to indicator-messages
      to the finalize functions here. Should fix LP: #359018 completely.
    * Minor warnings fixes in search of solution to above.
