Bug Description

Binary package hint: digikam

This is from the jaunty beta.

All my pictures are stored on a NAS that runs linux and samba. I have made a shortcut in dolphin, and verified that it works (I can see and access all folders and pictures from the NAS). The url is "smb://box/pics"

Now I'm trying to add the folder to the network folder list of digikam. Settings -> . -> Collections -> Collections on network shares -> Add collection.

In the folder chooser I select the dolphin shortcut (and again, I can see all subfolders from the tree). When I press OK, I get the following warning dialogue:

"Problem adding collection"
"The selected folder does not exist or is not readable"

digiKam Version 0.10.0
Using KDE 4.2.1 (KDE 4.2.1)
Description: Ubuntu jaunty (development branch)
Release: 9.04

I should've read the help text more thoroughly. It clearly states that the network folder must be mounted locally before digikam will read it.

(For others stumbling into the same darkness: install 'smbfs' and do sudo mount.cifs //box/pics /mnt/pics)

So while there is no smb bug in digikam, the source of my confusion remains (and this could be improved): digikam should not silently strip the smb:// url, but display a warning like "note that remote urls are not supported."

So while the original problem is moot, I still feel that this is a bug.

Sorry for the fuzz.

Take care and thanks for a great job.

Network shares can be added as collection to Digikam, but only if the network share is mounted locally. However, "Add Collection" dialog, uses standard File selection dialog, which also offers Network selection. It is very natural for the user to browse their network folder in Network tab, but when such path (for example: smb://hostname/share) is selected, digikam will give confusing message:

"There is already a collection for a network share with the same path."

This is reported also if I do not have any network collection at all!
