Bug Description

xkeyboard-config (xkb-data) being released with jaunty is version 1.5. However, launchpad uses 1.4 .pot, and thus even if 1.5 translations are submitted and even if the submission has no untranslated strings, launchpad changes those submissions based on 1.4 .pot, thus resulting in untranslated strings in the UI.
I noticed this for crh locale, but it affects all locales. For instance, here's French:
https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/jaunty/+source/xkeyboard-config/+pots/xkeyboard-config/fr/+translate?start=20

Look for ATM. The UI in jaunty uses 1.5 string which has:
"ATM/phone-style"
But the .pot is obsolete and has:
"ATM/phone-style hexadecimal keypad"

This would cause 106 untranslated strings for every language using 1.5 .po. I believe this is a critical l10n issue for jaunty.

xkeyboard-config doesn't provide a POT file. Please fix the package, and Launchpad will import it correctly.

It appears we don't have a roadmap for this yet. Could you please enlighten me on how 1.4 .pot got into launchpad: is it automatically pulled from xkeyboard-config bazaar project, or TP, or did somebody manually imported in into launchpad?

Thanks.

At some point, it was either manually imported or a xkeyboard-config 1.4 Ubuntu package (eg. in one of previous Ubuntu releases) contained the POT file as well.

I'll CC Arne (currently in charge of Ubuntu l10n) so he can see if there's someone he can ping about fixing this in xkeyboard-config.

Based on some testing (using Crimean Tatar/Turkish and French locales) after installing updates of all core packages today, the same issue we had last year is present this year as well (i'm updating bug title for versions, but not sure whether it's better to open a completely new bug instead).
Ideally, a new pot file could be uploaded in launchpad before the 15th, so that all issues in lang-packs could be resolved w/ the build to be performed on the 15th (if translation updates are made after the 15th, translation issues won't be resolved in time for the official 10.4 release).

Test strings in Options (there is a dozen others):
Make CapsLock an additional Hyper
Zero-width non-joiner character at second level

The first indicator of the bug having been fixed would be the total count for lang-pack changing from 681 to 694 (assuming no Ubuntu-specific strings added or strings removed):

summary: - launchpad xkeyboard-config .pot is obsolete: 1.4 whereas binary is 1.5
