Bug Description

Binary package hint: pidgin

When using the new indicator applet, clicking to bring up pidgin doesn't always bring it up (it sometimes comes up minimized).
This makes me cry.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

Could you please tell us your release of Ubuntu (Hardy? Intrepid? Jaunty?)

And also open up Pidgin and at the top menu click Help -> About and tell us which version of Pidgin you have.

This seems to defeat most of the focus stealing stuff. Not invincible, but much more reliable in bringing forward the window.

pidgin (1:2.5.5-1ubuntu2) jaunty; urgency=low

  * Adding debian/patches/11_buddy_list_really_show.patch to make
it so that the buddy list tries harder to appear. This fixes
some issues with it not appearing. (LP: #341142)
  * Adding debian/patches/10_docklet_default_off.patch to set the
default behavior to have no notification area icon. This fixes
    (LP: #340366)

Thanks for the information brendon, but the reason the bug was reported so vaguely, is because I was sitting next to Ted when I filed this bug, so he knew all that he needed to know, which is why I assigned it to him ;)

ok, Martin! Thanks for the input :-) I'm new and just trying to help...
As long as I didn't do anything wrong!

I have an issue with the used patch:
If I use OpenBox, than the partner list opens under other windows, but it gets the keyboard focus. Other windows doesn't do this. However if I recompile (with apt-src) the pidgin packages without the patch, everything is fine.
I think you should review the patch.

Ted, quite a few ubuntu users ([1] and on IRC) have complained that their buddy lists show in all workspaces, which I believe is caused by 11_buddy_list_really_show.patch

Can we delete this patch? It is really disturbing to OpenBox users, I think...

The same problem here, with the buddy list button appearing in the panels on all workspaces (although the window only shows where I have it open). If I click the button on the panel, the workspace changes to the one where the window is open, but I have having the button there if the window is not open on the workspace. Is there any known workaround at least until this problem is fixed?

Yeah, I agree with Peter. At least for Openbox users, this patch seems to cause exactly the problem it aims to fix. When I click the notification icon in trayer, the buddy list opens but goes to the background. It does not appear in the tint2 panel. However, I see it does get focus because the title bar of the previously active window turns grey. I'm using pidgin 1:2.5.5-1ubuntu8.1 in openbox 3.4.7.2-3 on Jaunty.

Note that this issue goes away when the libnotify plugin is disabled. I'm using version 0.14 of the plugin and libnotify 0.4.5-0ubuntu1.

Never mind, it doesn't seem to be related to the libnotify plugin.

What's the gain of calling gtk_window_stick() ? I don't see how it helps to circumvent the focus stealing prevention.
Removing it should fix bug #346840
