Bug Description

Right now CD-ROM's and other removeable devices are being put into /etc/fstab. This is dynamic information that may change over time.

This is no longer needed since Nautilus is able to pull this information from HAL now to populate the computer:/ view and pmount handles the mounting.

I propose not putting this static information into /etc/fstab during install as I see no benefit from it.

I also think that putting static information about removable device is useless. People running servers without X/GNOME/KDE probably know how to use /etc/fstab. If not, they will have to learn it anyway after inserting usb flash disc or external drive.

Putting static info to fstab can imho cause problems to average users, for example when they change configuration of their computer. I personally had this problem after installing ubuntu from flash drive. Installation program thought that flash drive was actually cd-rom drive and put line in fstab saying that filesystem at /dev/sda1 is is9660. After installation I couldn't use flash drives, with automounter simply saying it can't mount the device, without any explanation. Removing /dev/sda1 from fstab fixed the problem.

This bug was fixed in the package partman-target - 64ubuntu6

---------------
partman-target (64ubuntu6) lucid; urgency=low

  * Stop adding removable devices to /etc/fstab, now that apt knows how to
find CD-ROM devices using libudev (LP: #33512).
  * Update translations of Ubuntu-specific strings from Launchpad.
