Bug Description

This is a tracker bug for merging libdvdread from Debian unstable and doing rebuild for all the reverse-build-depends.

1. There is a ABI bump in the Debian version. Hence all the rebuilds will need to wait for libdvdread4 to clear new queue.
2. For the packages that build depend on both libdvdread-dev and libdvdnav-dev, libdvdnav needs to be synced before they can be rebuild.
3. The packages that build depend only in libdvdread-dev (ant nore libdvdnav-dev) can be rebuild as soon as libdvdread4 is out of new queue.

Changelog since current Ubuntu version.

libdvdread (4.1.3-3) unstable; urgency=low

  * Uploading to unstable.

 -- Daniel Baumann <email address hidden> Sun, 15 Feb 2009 18:16:00 +0100

libdvdread (4.1.3-2) experimental; urgency=low

  * Using patch-stamp rather than patch in rules file.
  * Replacing obsolete dh_clean -k with dh_prep.
  * Using quilt rather than dpatch.
  * Removing old homepage location in control file.
  * Updating year in copyright file.
  * Making wording in README.Debian more precise.
  * Updating rules to current state of the art.

 -- Daniel Baumann <email address hidden> Sun, 25 Jan 2009 01:43:00 +0100

libdvdread (4.1.3-1) experimental; urgency=low

  * Updating vcs fields in control file.
  * Merging upstream version 4.1.3.
  * Rediffing 01-css.dpatch.
  * Rediffing 02-kfreebsd.dpatch.
  * Removing 03-udf.dpatch, went upstream.
  * Bumping soname major to 4.
  * Updating rules to new upstream.
  * Including pkgconfig files.
  * Correcting permissions of /usr/share/bug/libdvdread-dev/script.
  * Updating debhelper docs file to new upstream.
  * Updating cross compiling handling in rules.

dvdbackup cannot build against this version of libdvdread, because DVDFileStat is not exported anymore. Details in bug report #330754.

Robert,

You seem to be subscribed to vamps bugs. Unfortunately due to bug 204980 you can't unsubscribe from this bug as it affects vamps. So you can either be patient, or unsubscribe from vamps bug mail at this address:

I just now tried to unsubscribe by going to the url you listed. There
is no "unsubscribe" on the page.
Email that can't be stopped is the definition of spam. This is a poor
system and should be fixed.

What is the rationale behind using this version of libdvdread (which is a fork) instead of the official one ?

@bill

Where did you read that it is a fork? And which official release are you talking about?

billl (olivier-rolland) wrote :

AFAICT, there are 2 versions of libdvdread. The historical one from ogle (http://www.dtek.chalmers.se/groups/dvd/downloads.shtml) and a fork from mplayer's dev. The version from ogle is 0.9.7 (DVDREAD_VERSION = 907 in dvd_reader.h), the version from mplayer is 4.1.3 but DVDREAD_VERSION = 904 in dvd_reader.h. All this is not very consistent, IMHO.

Onkar Shinde (onkarshinde) wrote :

@bill,

The version from mplayer is not a fork. They have taken over the development of libdvdread.
And a quick grep for DVDREAD_VERSION in the current source reveals that this string is defined but not used anywhere. So I don't think it is significant.

As far as the functionality goes, the upstream changelog claims that there have been many bug fixes. So I don't see a reason not to use it. Do you have any particular reason against the transition?

As long as there are 2 concurent versions of libdvdread, both starting from 0.9.4 and fixing things, one must be a fork of the other. Which is which is not meaningfull. However, I don't have any true evidence the 4.1.3 fixes more issues than 0.9.7.

Anyway, OGMRip is using DVDREAD_VERSION to check for functionnalities. Unfortunately, functionnalities of 4.1.3 and 0.9.4 are not identical even though DVDREAD_VERSION are.

seems that checking for DVDREAD_VERSION is not a good idea then.
