Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-do

gnome-do 0.8 was recently released and through their marketing state:

New plugins
 * Banshee, Bibtex, Cl.ickable, Claws mail, Google search, Opera, Ping.FM, Remember the Milk, System services, TinyUrl, Tracker search, and Translate to name a few. Plugins also install much faster now.

Faster Search, Better Results
 * Memory usage is down, and searches are noticably snappier. Our relevance algorithms are also better than ever -- Do will learn your habits and offer personalized search results immediately.

Animated Themes
 * Do's themes -- Classic, Mini, Glass, and the newly added Nouveau and Docky -- now sport gorgeous animations and dropshadows. Watch for falling jaws.

Docky
 * Docky[1] is our attempt to make Do more discoverable and memorable. It's the same Do you know and love, just a little friendlier.

File Previews
 * We've added preliminary support for viewing file thumbnails, so you can better recognize the images, movies, and documents you encounter in Do. If your file manager displays thumbnails, Do will attempt to show them.

Improved Text Entry
 * With support for copy, paste, and longer lines of text, Do's new extended text entry mode is perfect for composing emails and tweets. Activate text entry mode by pressing your period key.

Many Bugs Exterminated
 * 82 core bugs[2] and 29 plugin bugs[3] have been meticulously tracked and squished. There's still a lot of work to do, but Do 0.8 is one well-oiled machine.

New Plugin API:
 * In creating a more cross-platform codebase, a wonderful, platform-agnostic plugin API emerged. Plugins now have extensive access to notifications, logging, relevance information, threading tools, and much more.

It seems like a major release and a well polished program, so I'd like to see it updated to for Jaunty. It should be an easy pull since development is done within Launchpad.net/bzr too[4].

This isn't a bug, this is part of the normal development cycle.

When does it become a bug? When it doesn't make it into Jaunty?

0.8 isn't in Debian and I don't know Debian's willingness to package 0.8 so Ubuntu will either have to wait for Debian or package it themselves. This is a packaging request and I think it is quite valid.

Well, it *is* one of the ways we keep track of such tasks. Generally
with a shorter summary, though.

It'll be done through pkg-cli-apps in Debian. Shouldn't take too long.

My apologies.

What should I, as a non-developer, do to not bug developers in this manner? Just sit back and hope the piece of software gets packaged? Should I learn how to make .debs?

I'm sorry, but I'm only trying to help and my ignorance in the development process can get the best of me.

So, firstly: much of the software in the archive has watchfiles. That
means that every couple of days or so the Ubuntu External Health Status
system checks whether there's a new upstream version, and emails the
maintainer. We (generally) don't need to be told about new versions.

If there's some delay (a couple of weeks or so should be right), then
it's probably worth filing a bug - or jumping on to IRC and asking about
it. Do is in Universe, so #ubuntu-motu is the right place to be. We
should either be able to give you pointers towards the right place to
ask, or pointers towards how to help update it yourself.
