Kernel security update renders system unbootable

Bug Description

Recently, I used the Ubuntu update utility to update my kernel from 2.6.12-9-amd64-k8 to 2.6.12-10-amd64-k8.

However, the new kernel 2.6.12-10-amd64-k8 does not boot. The kernel itself seems to work, but it then says "shared library not found ... libc.so.6" and many others and then starts the busybox.

Booting 2.6.12-9-amd64-k8, which is still in the grub menu.lst, works correctly.

This would be an initramfs issue. However, you can probably fix it by doing:

$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-2.6.12-10-amd64-k8

See if that resolves it for you.

This does not resolve the problem. There was a recent kernel update again and I can't use the newest kernel, too => shared librarys not found, busybox/kernel panic. I think the modules don't get loaded so the SATA disks are not available.

Is there anything else that could help? Maybe replacing -k8 by -386 and then vice versa?

This has happened again now. I tried to deinstall the kernels which were not working. The result is that my whole Ubuntu is f***ed up because I can't boot anymore. All kernels fail (I don't know why, it scrolls down too fast) and the busybox doesn't work correctly, too (because libc.so.6 is in /lib64 and not in /lib, can fix that with LD_LIBRARY_PATH, but that doesn't help me though), with grub and lilo.

I don't want to reinstall my Ubuntu because I'm pretty sure that when I do the security update, the kernels will be destroyed again.

Please tell me what to do so that this bug is not "unconfirmed"! It is well confirmed!

No one else has been able to reproduce this problem, so there is something about it which is specific to your system. That is why it is unconfirmed: we don't yet know whether there is a bug or where it might lie.

If you can try to confirm this with a fresh install, that would help us very much.

Thank you for your answer. I now installed Dapper Drake Flight 6 and the problem did not occur. Let's hope that it was something installation specific and it doesn't occur anymore.

My best guess is that something went wrong when generating the initramfs, for example running out of space on the root filesystem. If you can reproduce the problem, please let us know.
