The way to fix this now is to replace the symbolic link /etc/alternatives/x-www-browser, making it point to /usr/bin/firefox or whatever other browser you'd like.

In fact the main problem is changing the preffered browser does not affect Thunderbird.

For those following along at home, I was asleep at the wheel when I merged in the debconf changes for thunderbird (which were introduced in 1.x in Debian, but we didn't get until 1.5, because our packages were badly forked)

To fix this on your machines, "dpkg-reconfigure mozilla-thunderbird" and select "GNOME". I'll change our packages to make "GNOME" the default if we seem to find a GNOME environment on disk during the install (but that won't fix current installations)

That bug still appears in Flight cd 5. Install Dapper F5, then thunderbird and konqueror, and all links from thunderbird will open in konqueror even though I've set Firefox as the default web browser in Gnome. However, the fix works, thanks.

And I'll confirm on my machine Thunderbird opens links in Epiphany instead of the default Firefox. Using Dapper F5. Going for the fix now

as root:
update-alternatives --config x-www-browser

Don't listen to doko (bad doko!)... Just "sudo dpkg-reconfigure mozilla-thunderbird" and pick "GNOME" instead of "Debian", then it will follow your GNOME preferences.

Installing Epiphany did also change my default browser for thunderbird, despite it beeing set as firefox on the gnome prefered applications.

I have resolved it as suggested with:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure mozilla-thunderbird

I don't think installing another browser should make it change the system default, even worse not updating or disregarding the options set on the gnome prefered applications .
