Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

Problem: Intrepid cannot access Samba/Windows Network Shares through the wireless connection.

How to Replicate: Disconnect ethernet. Connect to Windows network via wireless. Browse in Nautilus to Windows Network: nothing. Now, type
#sudo smbtree
nothing.
Connect ethernet jack. Ethernet and wireless block each other's access to the network (bug 243154). Therefore, disable wireless. Now, #sudo smbtree again. There's your network.

"Workaround": Only use wired connections for Windows shares.

I've tested this on three different wireless router/access points on two entirely different networks, one which was network with a Samba-based domain controller and another which was a Windows workgroup configuration.

Thanks,
glass.dimly

All updates current, Intrepid
Dell XPS M1330
Intel wireless 3945

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better, but unfortunately I've been unable to reproduce your issue on Ubuntu 8.10. Can you reproduce this issue with an Ubuntu LIVE CD and report back if the problem still exists on Ubuntu 8.10 LIVE CD? Also, could you please add the /var/log/syslog to your bug report as an attachment? Also you can submit more information for it by looking to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingNetworkManager , Thanks in advance.

Lupine,

Thanks for your response. I have an update to this bug, and will investigate it a little further as you suggest.

First, using nautilus to navigate to smb:/// returns nothing, nor does smbtree.

HOWEVER, when I specify the location like: smb://jermdell/, I find the network accessible.

Printers are unaccessible unless I plug int, probably due to the their reliance on access to the root level of the network.

So, this is a bug related to access to root level of a network through smbtree. Because of this change, I'm marking it "New."

Further investigation yielded different behavior which might be replicable, marking it new.

Thanks for looking at this bug. I've finally gotten the time to follow up on this, I hope that you will have a look and see what's going wrong.

First, my problem still exists, and I'd like to work to solve it.

Second, I was unable to replicate the bug using a 8.10 live CD. I diff'ed the smb.conf files (the live and my current install) and found the only difference to be in workgroup names.

Third, I read the Debugging Network Manager page pretty carefully but I'm not able to understand which of these tests would be useful for me to perform. And performing any of them would require some work and research on my part, so I'd like some direction, if possible.

So I'm attaching my log file. I created a comment near the end as to where I tried to access the network.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release the Karmic Koala. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.
