Bug Description

Binary package hint: hamster-applet

I'm using hamster 2.24.1 on jaunty. Currently hamster's main window appears below the panel (that is, the panel casts a shadow over hamster) and if you place the applet close to the right screen edge half of hamster's main window will appear out of the screen.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

Actually, I can't try it because Hamster crashes in Jaunty. Please see bug #360208.

#360208 solved, I can confirm this bug still happens. Should I provide a screenshot?

yes, please
do you have special effects (i.e. compiz) enabled? if yes, can you try without?
thank you

Hi Dimitrios,

I'm attaching a screenshot with the effects enabled, compared with the clock applet. You can see how the panel does not cast a shadow over the clock, but it does over hamster.

Here's a screenshot without the desktop effects. Since no shadows are casted this bug obviously can't happen, but you can notice how hamster is not perfectly aligned to the panel, as compared with the clock.

Ok, I see what you mean.
Just to be sure: do you have the latest version of the applet? In the description you mention 2.24.1, but Jaunty will ship with 2.26.0

I think there are actually two separate bugs in your report: the one about shadow and wrong window placement. I have reported first and found an upstream bug report about the other. Links to upstream reports: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=558931 and http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=590665. I'm going to link a second one to this report as it was discussed here.

Wrong window placement is now fixed by upstream: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=558931

To fix it yourself right now, type in console (tested with karmic):
sudo sed -i s/dropdown-menu/dialog/ /usr/share/hamster-applet/applet.ui

To take affect, log out from Gnome and log in again (or remove applet from panel and add it again).

I had the same problem, the hamster window would hang off the screen (on Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10). To confirm, Gabor Karsay's fix worked for me:

sudo sed -i s/dropdown-menu/dialog/ /usr/share/hamster-applet/applet.ui
