system-tools-backends' init script lacks 'status' action

Bug Description

Binary package hint: system-tools-backends

The init script for system-tools-backends should have a "status" action that returns the status of the daemon. A concerted effort is being made to add status actions to many Ubuntu services' init scripts: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/InitScriptStatusActions

I hope to submit a patch for this shortly after I get an LP bug number.

This patch should add a status function to the init script. This was created using the directions found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/InitScriptStatusActions ; however, I also changed debian/control.in.

Hi,

We were just discussing the other day whether we really needed the
init script, or whether we can rely on dbus activation for the backends.

Thanks for your work, it would be good to have if that isn't the way to
go, but the fix for not having a status action may be to delete the
script altogether.

Thanks,

James

Is there any update on the necessity of this init script, James?

I was considering sponsoring the patch that adds the status action. The whole init script can be removed subsequently, if that's the best course of action thereafter...

I say go for it. No harm in having a status action as long as we have
an init script. Last I heard we were probably going to keep it anyway.

Thanks,

James

  * debian/control: Depend on lsb >= 3.2-14 in order to use the status_of_proc() function
  * debian/control.in: Depend on lsb >= 3.2-14
  * debian/system-tools-backends.init: Add the 'status' action (LP: #300743)
