Bug Description

Hy,

I just finished a 4 hour struggle with grub and grub-install after I installed windows xp and trashed my partition table and existing grub on the mbr.

After restoring the partition types and other fun stuff, grub-install wouldn't work!

I always got The file /boot/grub/stage1 not read correctly.

After many reboots, I tried manually from grub

root(hdX,Z)
setup(hdX)

and grub was installed.

This looks to me as a bug in grub-install or a pretty missleading error message.

PS: The partition order was changed by the XP installer but I changed menu.lst and fstab. Of course that grub-install didn't work till the end.

grub-install is part of grub, not grub-installer (the latter is an installer component).

Colin, what do you mean by "[grub-installer] is an installer component"? Does this mean that bug 45989 and bug 46520 are also filed against the wrong package?

I'm sorry but it's been almost 3 years since I've posted that bug so I won't be able to report if the bug is still there or not.

I guess this is also a way to decrease the bug count, just let them die of old age...

I'm sorry that no one got back to you earlier. I don't see what's the point in keeping a bug open if the original reporter can't test it anymore. As I mentioned this bug can be reopened as every other bug if someone encounters the same issue.

You are right of course. Anyhow, I've stopped using Windows entirely about 6 months after that initial bug report so one might say it was a tipping point.
