Bug Description

Several packages currrently depend on libavformat52 exclusively. The package libavformat-unstripped-52 should be able to fulfill the dependency as well.

which is totally resonable and intended. please trust the people that
actually work on the package.

Are you telling me that it's reasonable and intended that in order to use the libs I need to install the unstripped variants (bug #285540), but in order to compile against those libs, I need to uninstall the unstripped variants and install the stripped variants?

I, er, disagree.

yes, there is absolutely no point in compiling against the unstripped libs and it is totally not intended to do so. On purpose!

I think a SRU (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates) is more
appropriate than a backport.

No, the intrepid issue is tracked in this bug report too.

@motu-sru: can you give a global ACK for all these packages? They only
need a rebuild without source change.

Thanks.

Anyway, I tested on intrepid with gpac today: it's now able to coexist with the unstripped variant, and works fine for me (i386 & amd64).

I can confirm that all these packages can be installed alongside the unstripped ffmpeg libs without any problem, they also all run fine, but I can't say for sure if the features which use ffmpeg work, but it would be surprising if they don't.
cmus: playing music works
libdlna0: launching ushare which rdepends it works, so it works
ushare: haven't figured out how to use it properly
mocp: playing music works
idjc: needs jack, and I can't get it to run
openmovieeditor: same
paraview: seems to work
smilutils: not sure, I haven't been able to get the ffmpeg2raw binary to produce something, but using the stripped variant wasn't more successful
xmms2: playing music works
