Bug Description

After logging as a normal user, a Guest account was activated for testing purposes. Inside the Guest account, different applications were tried, including OpenOffice. Both spreadsheet and word processing apps were not opening, briefly showing the start-up logo of the OO and then disappearing. Internet (Firefox) worked fine, Evolution offered to create a new account. Other programs informed about lacking permissions, etc. Only OpenOffice behaved strangely. After switching back to the normal user account, a red icon appeared at the right upper corner informing about a crash in the OpenOffice.

1) Ubuntu intrepid (development branch), Release: 8.10
2) Do not know exactly.
3) Expected to able to write a document before sending it by e-mail.
4) OpenOffice did not open any windows for text entry

Do you still have this problem with openoffice.org 1:2.4.1-9ubuntu2 in Ubuntu 8.10?

Same problem here. Upgraded to Intrepid from a clean Hardy-minimal installation. Then logged in as the main user, switched to guest-account and tried Ooo.

During the installation of the open-office-package apt complained about java, might be important.

What was the apt java complaint?

It flicked by too fast to see. All I can say is that it happened during the upgrade to Intrepid and I think it was something about javascript or jre. If logs are created and someone tells me the right commands, I'll post it here.

I tried running:

$ openoffice
The application cannot be started
The component manager is not available
$ echo JAVA_HOME
/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun

but I downloaded this version of Java... is there a problem with the default ubuntu java?

I have to correct myself: It did NOT happen during the upgrade to intrepid, but later during the installation of the ubuntu-desktop metapackage.

should we nominate for release?

Well OOo isn't crashing for me in the guest account but something definitely is not letting it run properly. It exits without starting up all the way but it isn't actually crashing. The crash in the original bug report was probably due to some other reason.

I'm trying to determine what exactly is different about the guest account that would be causing OOo not to run.

I found that it is fairly seriously locked down by:

/etc/apparmor.d/gdm-guest-session

So reassigning to gdm-guest-session.

I can confirm that this update fixes the issue, however, it would be better to reload apparmor, to re-read config data, or ask user to restart the system.
