I wanted to add a "me too" to bug #276483 that seems to be a dup of this bug.

"Starting Administrative Application" window does not pop up anymore. Running 'sudo update-manager' works without a hitch though.

Same thing happened here when I tried to use GDebi to install a .deb package: just the second I clicked on Install, the window and program crashed; it happens everytime I try

On what video card do you see that? Do you run compiz or metacity? If metacity with the metacity compositior or without?

So far I got a report for intel without compiz.

Could you please run (in a terminal):
$ python -c 'import gtk.gdk; print gtk.gdk.display_get_default().get_default_screen().is_composited()'

and attach the output here? Right before (or after) the crash happend?

I sponsored a upload of libgksu that should fix the problem, please let me know if libgksu 2.0.7-1ubuntu3 fixes the problem (once it hit the archive).

It happened several times opening both Synaptic and the update manager, last time compiz effects were disabled but it crashed nonetheless.

Depending how fast the official repo exposes Michaels uploaded libgksu, you can give it a try grabbing it from my PPA (here: https://edge.launchpad.net/~macslow/+archive), if you're very impatient.

While I never was able to reproduce the crash on any of my systems, I found a minor rendering glitch in the blurred drop-shadow. With the patched libgksu this should be fixed now. Please report here if the crash/rendering-glitch remains for you. Thanks in advance!
