Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Open Mozilla Firefox, choose "Help" from the menu bar, then select "Release Notes". Surprise, surprise:
Release notes for *Ubuntu* are shown, not the release notes for Mozilla Firefox (which you would expect).

Can't imagine this comes in the Mozilla.org supplied Firefox (didn't bother to verify), so this must be considered a bug in the Ubuntu-supplied version of Firefox. Searched the bug database, and found a related bug (# 210146) reported for beta versions of Firefox.

If this is somehow done on purpose (and therefore not technically considered a bug), then it is still a bug from a [user interface] point of view. Fix is obvious, and should be easy: when you start *Firefox*, choose help from the menu, and then "Release Notes", you should go to release notes for whatever version of *Firefox* you're running. Release notes for Ubuntu should be found elsewhere (like when you choose "System" from the desktop panel, followed by "About Ubuntu".

Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) LTS i386 desktop edition (english)
Mozilla Firefox reports as:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.3) Gecko/2008092510 Ubuntu/8.04 (hardy) Firefox/3.0.3
(distro-supplied regular upgrade, all shiny & new)
No user patches, just the usual multimedia plugins and NoScript installed.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386
Date: Fri Sep 26 02:06:20 2008
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 8.04
NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia
Package: firefox-3.0 3.0.3+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1
PackageArchitecture: i386
ProcEnviron:
 PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games
 LANG=en_US.UTF-8
 SHELL=/bin/bash
SourcePackage: firefox-3.0
Uname: Linux 2.6.24-19-generic i686

Still an issue in Ubuntu 9.04
Open firefox, go to menu Help > Release Notes
Expected : Firefox latest release notes (or Ubuntu 9.04 release notes perhaps)
but we have ubuntu 8.10 release notes
packages: ubufox 0.7-0ubuntu1 and firefox 3.0.8+nobinonly-0ubuntu3
Tested also on the LiveCD Ubuntu 9.04 Dektop version

My guess is it should be pointing to the relevant page at http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/releases/ . Confirmed on Intrepid with abrowser 3.0.3+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu1 . I agree that accessing the Ubuntu release notes through the Firefox help menu is not what is expected. It's also pointing to http://www.ubuntu.com/download/releasenotes/804 on Intrepid, but I assume either it will be updated to 810, or this bug will be fixed by release.

Rolf, which version are you using? Are you sure you chose Help -> Release Notes on an Ubuntu-supplied version?

To help clarify this bug, I use Jaunty on a daily basis. Apparently, when Jaunty is in use, at some point, the updates have replaced the Ubuntu 8.10 release notes with firefox release notes. If I do a fresh install using any ISO image, the release notes are from Ubuntu 8.10. They do not update when update-manager is run, so I do not know how long it takes before they catch up.

I did test this using Jaunty Desktop amd64 CD, Jaunty Desktop i386 CD, Jaunty Alternate amd64 CD, Jaunty Alternate i386 CD in both Ubuntu and Xubuntu versions. All cd's are dated 20090225.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, I am closing it because the bug has been fixed in the latest development version of Ubuntu - Lucid Lynx. It now defaults to Ubuntu 9.10 release notes, http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/910 , instead of firefox release notes. Since Lucid is still alpha2, I would expect the notes to update before the final release. Ubuntu 9.04 defaults to Ubuntu 8.10 release notes.

Alexander, where are users expected to find Release Notes for Firefox then? Help>Release Notes is used by Mozilla for browser release notes, not release notes for whatever someone decides. How about keeping Release Notes as the normal Firefox link and adding Ubuntu Release Notes to be the Ubuntu-specific link?

All the other menu items are about Firefox. So at least you should
separate the item from the others and change the text to something like
"Ubuntu Release Notes" to make it clear that it is not about Firefox.

I would say not all the other items are about firefox, either.
    Clicking on "Help -> Report a Problem" wants me to report a bug using apport, which will report it to launchpad.
    Clicking on "Help -> Get online help" sends me to another Ubuntu page, https://launchpad.net /ubuntu/karmic/+sources/firefox-3.5/+gethelp.
    Clicking on "Help -> Translate this Application" sends me to https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/+source/firefox-3.5/+translations.

I am thinking this gives it a customized version in Ubuntu.
