Bug Description

I wondered why gmail was telling me I got am email from myself, when in fact it came from Malone. This is very dumb. It also breaks email sorting (again)

And hey, just to add to the fun, I also get fun emails like this one:

I've made some changes to the headers so that they're "correct" now. What do you think of them now? How would you do it differently?

The fundamental problem is that Malone should not be sending email as me or anyone else, period.

It is not sending email "as you", but it is forwarding input that /you/ gave to it. I understand what you're bringing up, though.

There is a tradeoff here that we need to consider carefully. We currently send out email that says From: Christian Reis, and Reply-To: <email address hidden>. This allows other people (apart from me) to quickly see who made the comment, and reflects well the originator of the bug content (even if it wasn't done in an email to start off with).

If we changed it to be From: Malone Bug 2711 <email address hidden> we'd lose this ability. On the upside, bugmail would be easily groupable by bug, but then again, it already is thanks to our threading support. I don't know how to evaluate this, but these are my considerations.

It may not be *actually* sending as me, but from a casual users view it doesn't look much different and it looks enough like I am sending it that my email client gets confused.

What if we said "From: Christian Reis (via Launchpad) <email address hidden>" -- ? Would that be acceptable, even if it made the whole thing a bit longer?

Does it solve the problem of email clients being confused about who is sending the email?

I need more information. What do you mean when you say "being confused"?

What happens if you think of Malone as an "intelligent mailing list" with an optional Web form for posting comments? Mailing lists send out email "as you", and yet most people seem to be okay with that behaviour.

By confused I mean that my email client (gmail) shows that I sent those emails, because they appear to come from me.

I also don't think that we should treat Malone as a mailing list. It doesn't look or act like a mailing list, therefor it shouldn't do what a mailing list does.

The next action required here is for me to read the warthogs@ thread
that was opened on this topic and summarize the conclusions into the
description of this bug.
