This bug was fixed in the package debianutils - 2.29ubuntu2

---------------
debianutils (2.29ubuntu2) intrepid; urgency=low

  * select-editor: ensure that $HOME/.selected_editor is writable
    (LP: #264454).
  * sensible-editor: ensure that select-editor is only called if the current
    input is a tty (LP: #264423).
