Bug Description

On a clean install of Ubuntu-Desktop 8.04.1 I followed the instructions in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VMware/Server to install vmware-server-1.06-91891.tar.gz. Vmware-server installs correctly and mounts iso/starts virtual machine without a problem.

I then tried to create an Ubuntu-Server 8.04.1 virtual machine. The virtual machine is using the default creation options, set to Linux: Ubuntu with bridged networking. (bridged to host eth1 wired NIC)

During the install of the guest, the virtual machine crashes. It crashes after detecting hardware and configuring the network. I've tried installing with acpi=off, noapic, nolapic, but all guest install options still fail.

However, when I remove the virtual NIC, the install completes without any problems except a complaint that there is no NIC at about the point the installer normally crashes with the virtual NIC attached. However, after the install completes successfully and the machine reboots and starts the default entry in grub, which errors:
Starting up...
This kernel requires the following features not present on the CPU:
0:6
Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU.

I've also tried booting the guest machine from network where I have the liveCD shared by NFS/tftp. It shows boot logs until [19.x] (goes too fast to catch it all) bringing eth0 up. Then the machine instantly crashes.

The vmware log is attached.

After a lot of testing, I still haven't found what is causing the problem. The relevant host specs are:

Acer Aspire 2012wlmi
Intel Pentium M 1.5 GHz
Intel 855GME

I have resolved the issue by installing a command-line only 2.6.24-19-generic kernel system and now everything works fine.

I also found that when setting the guest OS vmware setting to something besides Linux->Ubuntu or Linux->Other 2.6.x kernel, the system would boot properly. ie - when creating a guest machine, I set it to Other->Other and the system would boot and run correclty, but performance was terrible.

The host OS was installed from the network using the livecd instructions from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/LocalNet#A%20variation:%20Booting%20the%20%22Live%20CD%22%20image

So, to reiterate, the system runs fine with 2.6.24-19-generic kernel installed from netboot hardy images on server cd with command-line only packages and any vmware guest settings.
