SHARP AR-M165: Uses postscript when printer does not support it

Bug Description

I am trying to use a (networked) SHARP AR-M165 printer. Using the default (recommended) driver, the printed test page says "Error: Postscript printing not licensed for this printer."

I think it uses PCL instead, but there's no detection of that from Ubuntu and no way to choose that, so no way to make the printer work.

By the way, this works with the Generic recommended PL6 driver, though that shouldn't be interpreted as a reason to close this bug.

This is still a problem with Ubuntu Jaunty, in a fresh install.

This is not a problem of system-config-printer but of foomatic-db. We got only PostScript PPDs from Sharp and not the information that PostScript is only an add-on for some of these printers. I will add "pxlmono" as a supported (and the recommended) driver, then the printer should work out of the box.

This still doesn't work for me. I've tried on all today's latest pkgs from karmic beta on i386. I have a networked Sharp MX2300N (with no postscript module). I tried just about every combination of driver available under Sharp for this model and Generic PCL5c, Generic PCL6 / XL. Whatever I try results in cups logging that the print job succeeded. In every case the printer makes start-up noises, data light flashes for a few seconds and then no printing appears... Tried all the different comms protocols also.

BTW: Works fine from a simple unauthenticated jetdirect port 9100 PCL print from WinXP on the very same local subnet.

linuxcentre,
It is better to open a new bug report for your issue since the original bug reporter had no problem with the PCL6 driver.
Please file the bug by running "ubuntu-bug cups" on a terminal so we get the apport information, can you also attach your cups error_log with debugging enabled after trying to print something as described here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems#CUPS%20error_log

Thanks!

Thanks. I just started using the specific non-PS driver for Sharp ARM-M165 in Karmic, after getting error pages recently from the printer with the generic PLC6 driver. It works perfectly and fixed these new errors. Thanks, again.
