Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

I'm using ubuntu Intrepid Ibex with the last nautilus update (2.23.5.1).
To reproduce the problem you must have a folder with few normal folders and files (so nautilus doesn't show the scrollbar) and a lot of hidden files and folders (so if nautilus shows also hidden files appears the scrollar).
Ok, now with "show hidden files" disabled go in the same directory with two differet tabs, then enable "show hidden files". You see that in the tab you are seeing appear the scrollbar to let you see all the files, but in the other tab the scrollbar doesn't appear when it should.

I hope to be useful for you

TESTCASE:
* open a browser view on a directory which has enough items to require a scrollbar to be displayed
* open a new tab on the same directory
* switch back to the previous tab and notice that the scrollbar is not there and that you can't scroll

I'd like to add that you don't even have to do any tricks with showing hidden files, simply tab swapping will kill the scrollbar. Resizing the window brings it back for the active tab, but loses the scrollbar(s) for the other tabs.

I can report the same issue. Found it because when I am in a tab wich requires vertical scrolling and i open a new tab with ctrl+t, the scrollbar on the previous window dissapears.

I just wanted to report the same issue! When you open folders that needs scrolling in tabs. There is no scrolbar!

Confirmed in Intrepid final.

Bug: If you have nautilus open and middle-click a folder to open it in a new tab, if it has a number of items that overflow the window size, the scrollbar will not be shown on this new tab.

Workaround: resizing the nautilus window, even just slightly will force the scrollbar to be generated.

Is it possible that this is a result of upgrading instead of doing a fresh install? Is there some setting to reset to fix this? I find it hard to believe that this bug is getting so little attention if it is not because it pretty much makes the tabs in nautilus useless.

the bug is not likely due to a setting or specific to upgrade no, and nautilus gets lot of bugs and there is a the team working on it has limited ressources and tabs is only one of the view available there

also
open a tab with more files than displayable
open a new tabe to the same place

go to first tab
notice that tab has no scroll
press down
notice that nautilus doesn't scroll but you highlight a file off screen

switching to a minimizing and restoring nautilus when on tab 1 restores the scroolbar
but disables it on tab 2

Side note: pressing F5 or Ctrl-R (refresh) makes the scrollbar (re)appear on the currently open tab. Nautilus still knows how to render directory contents afresh.

Sorry for the noob question but
How can I get this patch applied?

Revision history for this message
Christoph Korn (c-korn) wrote :

You can get the current sources by "apt-get source nautilus"
You can then download the patch: "wget -O scrollbars.patch http://launchpadlibrarian.net/21136285/10_scrollbars.patch"
Then cd into the source tree and run: patch -p1 < ../scrollbars.patch

You can also just install the packages from my PPA which just
have this patch applied. My packages will be superseded by the next version
from Ubuntu.

Thanks Christoph, but I don't know where the Source tree is located at.
I also tried to search for .patch files only and files named
'scrollbars' after have done the step you suggested. No search result.
So I don't know where to cd through the terminal to apply the patch.

Any idea?

RoDoLFo TX use Christoph's ppa for the packages https://launchpad.net/~c-korn/+archive/+index# you will see an entry for nautilus open it scroll down to the bottom and choose the appropriate .deb file you need. That way is simple and clean thanks to Christoph.
