Bug Description

Colin,

I see that you have dropped hplip-gui to a Suggests.

+hplip (2.8.6-1ubuntu2) intrepid; urgency=low
+
+ * Drop hplip-gui to Suggests. It uses Qt so isn't appropriate in the
+ Ubuntu desktop, and we have system-config-printer anyway.

I can understand that you wish to minimise the dependencies against Qt, however some of the hplip packages do require Qt to operate correctly:

Some of the hplip apps can be run in either a non-gui mode (batch)
[hp-sendfax -n, hp-fab -i] or a gui mode.

However some of the newer apps are gui only:
. hp-systray, hp-print, hp-toolbox

While the bulk are CLI only:
. hp-align, hp-check, hp-clean, hp-colorcal, hp-info, ...

I doubt system-config-printer performs the hp specific tasks such as ink levels etc

In the Debian package I have reverted hplip-gui back to a Recommends:

Is there anything we (HPLIP) need to do with this defect? Can I close?

Aaron, this is not an upstream problem, but a problem of the Ubuntu and Debian packaging. Therefore I have reassigned the bug to the Ubuntu package of HPLIP now.

Mark, Ubuntu is intendedly dropping some features of HPLIP (hp-toolbox, hp-sendfax with GUI, ...) for the GNOME and XFCE desktop CDs to save the space which is otherwise needed by including Qt. As apt-get installs "Recommends" by default fronm now on, we need to demote hplip-gui to "Suggests" for Ubuntu (which Colin has done). I have forwarded Colin's changes to Debian (via the SVN) to make a sync of HPLIP possible (use of absolutely identical source packages for both Debian and Ubuntu).

hplip-Toolbox is quite a usefull Tool.

For Example, hplip-gui can recognised printers added to the system even after Install. Or even for Warnings if cardridges are on low or it is even possible to print directly from the Toolbox.
So this drop is not well done. Please relaunch this gui

And I just wanted to use hplip-gui today and the gui does not work.

The Terminal gives me a segmentation fault (core dumped).

So how can I fix this up??

Greetings
Linuxexperte
