Bug Description

In Ubuntu, USB Keys are mounted on the desktop and they can be unmounted by right-clicking on their icon.
Since Ubuntu Netbook Remix doesn't have a desktop that shows icons, we have to find an intuitive way to show USB keys when they're plugged and to give the user the possibilty to unmount them.

Also beware of this bug https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/28835 : "Unmount" in volume right-click menu, is tech-speak and undiscoverable

Moving this to the launcher as it has to replace the main-menu, and therefore it must show mounted drives.

I have an experimental branch that dynamically shows available volumes, ala the Places part of the Ubuntu menu. The relevant part of the changelog:

- Detect the insersion and removal of all local volumes (USB keys, SD cards,
etc), and show appropriate icons for them in the sidebar, just as the
  Gnome "places" menu does
- Do the same for all remote volumes (SFTP mounts, etc)
- Show unmounted local volumes grayed out, clicking on them mounts them
and opens them if the mount is successful
- Show an eject icon for mounted volumes (local and remote), clicking it
unmounts the volume or remote mount

There is a full changelog on the bzr branch page:
https://code.launchpad.net/~mike82/netbook-remix-launcher/work

You can install the package by adding my PPA to /etc/apt/sources.list:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/mike82/ubuntu hardy main
(then "sudo apt-get update ; sudo apt-get install ume-launcher", of course)

The package is of course configured so that the next official ume-launcher release will supersede it.

I've hooked up all the stubs to make eject/unmount operations work. Thanks (again) Mike!

that seems quite instable... i've just updated my system to make the test (Ubuntu 8.04 up to date) :

i've inserted an audio CD -> The name of the audio CD shows up in right column with an eject button close to it
i've clicked on the eject button -> Audio CD was ejected BUT ume-launcher crashed

Shall i fill another bug report for that crashing behaviour (this bug is still there with updates of the day) ?

no more crash with last update when ejecting an audio CD. Amazing.

I'm not sure if this part of this report or if i have to fill a separate bug report :

Plug an USB Key : its icon is displayed within the UNR Launcher.
Then click the eject button near the USB Key icon in the Launcher : the USB Key remain (so its icon) and the only visible effect from a user point of view is that the eject button icon disppeared !
One may ask if the system took the action (clicking the eject button) in consideration since the USB Key icon is still there and no confirmation message or signal was displayed to the user.

(This problem doesn't occur with a CD since the CD is physically ejected as a confirmation of the action).

Good point, and also one that Mike had fixed in his patch (i think). The latest launcher will grey-out volumes that are not mounted (or volumes that become unmounted, like after eject).

i confirm that usb key icon is now grey-out when unmounted after ejection.
However, once greyed out, one click on the icon allow me to access to the volume

I was just about to suggest that there could be an eject button next to the volume, like in the nautilus side bar, when I realised there already is - sometimes. There seems to be something buggy going on here, sometimes it remains greyed out as though not mounted, when it clearly is (I can browse the drive). This makes it difficult to unmount as theres no button for it.
