after installing CONEXANT modem driver => failing to use Synaptic

Bug Description

The error received from synaptic:

E: The package conexant needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.
E: Internal error opening cache (1). Please report.

Installed the following packages:
avm-fritz-firmware-2.6.12-9 (3.11-0ubuntu38)
capiutils (1:3.7.2005-07-09-2ubuntu4)
libcapi20-3 (1:3.7.2005-07-09-2ubuntu4)
nvidia-glx (1.0.7667-0ubuntu25)

Reinstalled the following packages:
linux-restricted-modules-2.6.12-9-686 (2.6.12.4-11)

remark:
(1) can't use update tool
(2) the driver was installed using dpkg and when I tried unintalling:

eldad@eldad:~$ sudo dpkg -r conexant
dpkg: error processing conexant (--remove):
 Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should
 reinstall it before attempting a removal.
Errors were encountered while processing:
 conexant
eldad@eldad:~$

Thanks for your bugreport.

Where did you got the "conexant" deb-package from? Is the advice "please
reinstall it first" any help? Or do you don't have the package anymore? If
re-install it (and then removing it) is no help I would like to know the error
messages. We may have to try something different then.

I'm sorry, there isn't a lot that can be done here except trying to get rid of
the "conexant" package. It has messed up the package database pretty badly it seems.

I would also be interessted in the line that contain "conexant" in
/var/log/dpkg.log.
