Bug Description

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx-new

The version of the Nvidia binary drivers included in Hardy does not provide support for the 9600 GT. Installing the binary driver by hand and maintaining it through kernel updates is annoying.

Same here it doesn't work with my 9600GT card. Even the stable EnvyNG doesn't work as it should.

I can also confirm the same problem. Has anyone else been able to fix it?

EnvyNG does not detect any suitable hardware and if I force it to manually install it just breaks everything.

I downloaded and compiled the binary driver from Nvidia but this only worked once... after a reboot, it comes up in low graphics mode and the max resolution I get is 800x600

Any help would be very appreciated... Thank you

Bonez -

Manually installing the Nvidia driver (.bin) works for me. The only trick is that every single kernel update breaks X, which needs to be fixed by re-running the installer from a console while X isn't running.

Manual install directions: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NvidiaManual

If those directions don't work, I suggest reporting a bug to Nvidia or posting over on the Ubuntu forums for help - using the Nvidia driver package is a bit off topic for a bug on Launchpad.

Hi,

After asking a question (see https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/39973 ) I recognized my problem in this bug report. My x-server apperently became unstable after a kernel update that came together with the latest EnvyNG update last week. I guess I simply have to wait untill my videocard will properly be supported. Two questions remain:

1) How can I restore the situation before I installed EnvyNG and the driver in order to have a stable x-server again.
2) I can live with the solution suggested in this link https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NvidiaManual but I do not understand the instructions at "Kernel and Mesa Updates". Can somebody explain to me in more detailhow to boot into the new kernel and how and where I have installed the NVIDIA installer file? I am quite new to Ubuntu/linux.

Cheers,

BLoesum

Bloesum: without a log it is difficult to say what caused the problem.

can you reproduce the problem and then (without rebooting) type this in the command line?
cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log $HOME/

then reboot and send me the Xorg.0.log which you will find in your home directory

Nat Tuck, Bloesum:
Using NVIDIA's installer can break the system. The NVIDIA installer doesn't pay attention to what is on the system and therefore simply overwrites certain files which are part of other packages thus causing problems when you try to upgrade Ubuntu to a new release (e.g. from Hardy to Intrepid). Furthermore when the kernel is updated, the Xserver will crash and you will have to use the NVIDIA installer again. Use it at your own risk.

@Alberto: I have send my Xorg.0.log file to Alice.

Bloesum:
1) the log is so short that I can't see the cause of the problem. Of course it's not your fault.

2) to undo what EnvyNG did, type:
sudo envyng --uninstall-all

After upgrading to version 8.10 Alpha6, I found the proprietary Nvidia drivers 173 & 177 included with an update.
The 177 installed without any problems and my card is working flawless except during booting when I get an error:
undefined video mode number:307
But I guess that will be fixed in the final version. So it's just a matter of time. ;-)

Thank you for reporting this issue about a driver from the
linux-restricted-modules package. lrm-2.4.24 was shipped with Ubuntu
8.04 which reached end-of-life for desktop support on May 12th, 2011.

For that reason, this bug report is being closed at this time. I'm
marking it wontfix because what you describe is probably a valid issue,
but there are no plans to work on lrm 2.4.24 bugs further.

The issue may be resolved in a newer version. If not, aside from filing
a new bug report, another angle may be to file it directly with the
driver vendor.
