Bug Description

As I started to migrate data from an old laptop to a new one (Asus M50SA) which has 88E8055 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 13) I detected that copying the files from old laptop using sshfs didn't work properly. The amount of data being copied is up to 10 GB.

Once sshfs failed completely and segfaulted due to network errors. During the transfer new messages (e.g. sky2 eth0: rx error, status 0x2c20002 length 706) keep appearing in dmesg.

So, now I'm very concerned that the file transfer worked ok and managed to transfer all the data correctly.

The development (or rather bug fixing which has been going on since 2006 for 88E family) seems to be very active. In the latest kernel rc (2.6.25-rc9) there's a whole bunch of changes in the sky2 module (drivers/net/sky2.c 151 + 124 - 0 ! ) http://www.kernel.org/diff/diffview.cgi?file=%2Fpub%2Flinux%2Fkernel%2Fv2.6%2Ftesting%2Fpatch-2.6.25-rc9.bz2;z=4589 .

I think it is vital to keep some new version of sky2 backported to hardy heron.

Hi Jarkko,

Just curious if you've tested the upstream changes (ie tested the 2.6.25-rc9 kernel) to verify these changes do indeed fix the issue you are seeing? For help with building and booting the upstream kernel, refer to: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/GitKernelBuild - Thanks.

I'm also removing the linux-source-2.6.24 task since beginning with the Hardy development cycle the Ubuntu kernel source package naming convention changed from linux-source-2.6.xx to just linux. Sorry for any confusion. Thanks.

Other users have reported issues with network cards of the same family (8053, 8056), and seemingly Marvell have fixed issues in both with firmware updates; you'll have to contact your motherboard vendor for the update, and it may well help, since this is not a sky2 driver bug, as the driver has been stable for some time.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.
