Appearance Properties wants to install FGLRX for Compiz; breaks system

Bug Description

I run the open source ATI driver, and usually switching from "None" to "Normal" just activates Compiz. Running "compiz --replace" works flawlessly, infact.

However, I just tried it today and it asked me for my password to install drivers. I figure maybe FGLRX finally supports composite properly, so I gave it a go.

After installing FGLRX, I reboot my system, and X fails to start properly so I get the failsafe mode which lets me configure my graphics system with the now defunct DisplayConfig-GTK.

DC thinks I have 2 monitors (I have a VGA and a DVI output, so maybe that's why) and that they are both Plug 'n' Play and should be at 640x480.

It also thinks I have 2 graphics adapters, the first of which is using the "ati" driver and the second is using "vesa".

Choosing "ati" for both of these, or "fglrx", changes nothing. I reboot and the same thing happens.

I ran Jockey and noticed that it said that FGLRX was "In Use" with the green tick, *but the checkbox for "Enabled?" was unticked*! I ticked it, and restarted, but it didn't change anything. At least, now, Jockey said it was "In Use" and "Enabled".

Disabling it, then rebooting, again changed nothing. Enabling it, then rebooting again changed nothing.

Only after I killed the X server, removed the xorg config (rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf), uninstalled fglrx myself, rmmod'd fglrx, modprobe'd radeon, then restarted GDM did I actually get a working system.

Something has gone very wrong!

The same (more or less) happens to me.

Using free radeon driver with an ATI 9600 XT, in a desktop PC. Compiz with Normal effects works ok.

When I click Extra effects, Driver Manager asks whether I want to install the fglrx driver. I always cancel, so I hadn't the nightmare you describe, but still no Extra effects either.

I filled a bug about it that's very similar to yours (title almost stolen from yours, sorry about that), it's #207957.

Out of curiosity, do you have a laptop or a desktop computer? If it's a laptop, your bug could be related to bug #201330.
